They played a game at Oracle Park last night but that was really a sideshow to the main event, which was Sergio Romo's retirement. I am pretty sure no roster spots were won or lost and there was definitely nothing that happened to shed any light on what will happen in the regular season. Ross Stripling RHP needed to make his pitch count without getting hurt. That was pretty much the goal of the game and it showed.
Sergio Romo's retirement ceremony was touching and joyous but also a bit sad at the same time. He threw a couple of throwback sliders but was mostly not at all sharp and wasn't able to record the out he desperately wanted. And afterward in the dugout after the hug line had run out, Sergio obviously did not want it to end and keep looking for one more teammate or coach or waterboy to hug. And that's OK. We didn't want it to end either. Sergio Romo will always be one of my very favorite Giants of all time.
The Giants got Rule 5 Draft pick Nick Avila RHP back from the White Sox. The other 8 players they lost in the Rule 5 Draft won't be coming back since they were taken in the minor league phase and there is not return rule for that phase.
I still mourn the loss of Frankie Tostado.
ReplyDeleteI would like to register my displeasure at the state of the Giants right now. This should be one of MLBs premiere franchises making the playoffs every single year -- especially with expanded wild card slots.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that they are projected for the 19th most WAR this year, isn't where this franchise should be. Farhan & ownership is clearly competent, but the Giants were should be a super team, and 5 years after the change in management that vision is nowhere in sight.

Well, they shooted their shots at Arson Judge and Carlos Correa. With either of those players on the roster, they would be in line for at least 95 Wins. I also think some projections have them at higher than 19'th WAR. And lastly, they are called projections for a reason. There is a reason they play the games.
Delete....for instance ZIPS has the Giants projected at 88 Wins in 2023 tied for 9'th best in MLB.
