The Giants played their best game of the spring by a large margin with Mitch Haniger and David Villar starring on the hitting side and the Giants pitchers shutting down a packed lineup of USA All-Stars. Key Lines:
Mitch Haniger LF- 2 for 3, 2 2B. After Lamonte Wade Jr RF led off the Giants half of the first inning with a booming single off the RF wall, Haniger drove one off the same wall for a double to set up two runs for the Giants on a FC groundout by Joc Pederson 1B and a SF by Wilmer Flores DH.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 3, HR. Villar singled hard up the middle in his second AB of the evening for his first hit of the spring then drove one onto the RF berm for his first spring HR(Stats from this game don't officially count for Cactus League). The HR came off a pretty good RHP in Kendall Graveman.
Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 2, 2B, SB. Johnson is having himself a nice little spring. As thin as the Giants are for guys who can field the CF position, he could be playing himself into a MLB gig.
Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. After starting the game walk to Mookie Betts RF and HBP to Mike Trout CF, DeSclafani calmly went fly out, K and fly out to Kyle Schwarber DH, Paul Goldschmidt 1B and Nolan Arenado 3B. He then breezed through the next 2 innings and is looking like the guy we saw in the first half of 2021.
Sean Manaea LHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. No shame in giving up a solo HR to Goldy. Manaea was otherwise sharp and looks ready for a bounceback season.
Scott Alexander LHP, John Brebbia RHP and Mauricio Llovera RHP pitched single scoreless innings each with Alexander striking out the side.
While the Giants spring record is not impressive, most of the runs scored against them have come off pitchers who are not expected to make the team. The Giants SP's in particular have dominated so far....all 8 of them!
Sean Hjelle RHP who has had a terrific spring so far gets the start today against the Brewers in Scottsdale.
