One bad inning by Ross Stripling RHP was way too much for a weak-hitting Giants lineup to overcome.
Stripling took over after three strong innings from Alex Cobb RHP and gave up 3 runs including 2 line drives and a HR. He seemed to get stronger over his 3 innings of work allowing another run in the 5'th inning and finished with a scoreless 6'th.
Alex Cobb RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA = 9.00. Cobb let the catcher call the pitches with much better results than his first start in which he tried to call his own pitches and found it difficult with the strict time limit on the pitch clock.
Jake Junis RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.25. Giants are looking for Junis to be a multi-inning reliever/spot starter a role that he seemed to thrive in last season before seeming to wear down after being pressed into a full time starting role by injuries to other SP's.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.00. Doval seems to be in mid-season form. Please just stay healthy!
Continued futility at the plate for multiple projected Giants starting position players is starting to become a bit worrisome, although it's admittedly still crazy early in spring training. Lamonte Wade Jr, Thairo Estrada, Wilmer Flores, Brandon Crawford and YtY went a combined 1 for 13 in today's game and are a combined 5 for 42(.119) on the spring. Again, wouldn't be too concerning at this point but all of these guys have something to prove coming into the season.
Forever Giant Matt Duffy started at 3B for the Royals and went 3 for 3, 2B to help sink his old team.
The Giants go on the road tomorrow to play the Reds with the SP TBD.
Not concerned about veterans that have slow starts in Spring training The main thing is they get their work in to prepare for the season and stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteI think there is reason to be concerned about Wade Jr, Crawford and YtY regardless of their spring performance.
DeleteAgreed, those player's need to have close to career years for the Giants to be good. I'd be most concerned about Wade since he's coming off an injury and he's had only one good year 2021. I've been frustrated by Giants players in the past who hit great in spring training and started slow in the regular season, but pleasantly surprised by players who couldn't hit in spring training and got off to fast starts once the season starts. Go figure! Hope slow spring performances by Crawford, Wade and YTY don't carry over to the season. We shall see.
DeleteIt is true there is very poor correlation between spring stats and regular season performance although I don't think it's zero correlation.
DeleteAnd the two most important goals of spring training for every player is 1. Get your work in and 2. Stay healthy!
DeleteEnjoy your blog. I try to read it each morning.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I really appreciate that.
DeleteIt appears, or I assume, that Perez caught both Cobb and Stripling. So, the rough 4th seems not to be catching related.
ReplyDeletePS: No game today. I'll try to think of something to post. If not, see you tomorrow evening.
