Spring Training Game Wrap 3/14/2023: Giants 7 D'Backs 6

Austin Slater DH drove in 4 runs and J. D. Davis 3B drove in 3 to help the Giants outscore the D'Backs at Talking Stick.  Key LInes:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 0 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .083.  Nice to see a couple of walks from the leadoff spot in the lineup but gotta be concerned about YtY's offense going into the regular season.

Austin Slater DH- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .143.  Slater hit a bases-loaded double off the "green monster" in CF to drive in 3 and then drew a bases-loaded walk for the game-winning RBI.

J.D. Davis 3B- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .261.  Davis manned the hot corner today.  The 3-run HR was a monster bomb to oppo field.

Damon Dues LF- 1 for 1, 2B, BB.  BA= .500.

Wade Meckler LF/CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .417.

Brett Wisely SS- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .211.  Isan Diaz was optioned out while Wisely stays which probably tells us something about the Giants middle infield depth chart.  Is Wisely first in line to play SS if Crawford isn't ready?

Logan Webb RHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 4.15.  Webb has been officially named Opening Day starter against the Yanks in NY.

Melvin Adon RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 3.60.  Is Adon back in the prospect picture after a long string of injuries?  He has to prove he can stay healthy and command his pitches consistently.

Scott Alexander LHP and John Brebbia RHP recorded a scoreless frame each.

Brandon Crawford SS received a cortisone shot to the knee.

Luis Gonzalez OF underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his back.  May be able to play again mid-late season.

Alex Wood LHP faces the White Sox and Lucas Giolito RHP in the home half of a split-squad game tomorrow.  Sean Hjelle RHP goes against Madison Bumgarner LHP and the D'Backs in Talking Stick.

  1. Damon Dues may be under the radar for most of us but not to the Doc!
    From August of last year:
"Damon Dues was signed as a NDFA late last season and played briefly in the ACL. He's 24 yo so very much of a longshot to ever sniff the major leagues."
He's seems to be sniffing this Spring - LHB plays all 'round the infield. Doc has reported elsewhere Dues has a knack for getting on base.
He seems to be able to get his bat on the ball when not taking a walk.

  2. Doc you might be right about Hjellie breaking out. Having a great spring. Kap mentioned Hjellie, Harrison Beck, and Keaton Winn as pitchers who could break out this season. Interesting story to follow this season
