Spring Training Game Wrap 3/3/2023: Giants 3 Rockies 2; Rangers 11 Giants 7

Anthony DeSclafani pitched 2 shutout innings in his first spring appearance and the scrubs continue to outplay the regulars in the field.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  FB was reportedly sitting at 94 MPH.

Vaun Brown RF- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .333.  HR as oppo field shot to get the Giants their first run in bottom of the first inning in the Scottsdale game.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 1.80.  Hjelle seems to be the forgotten prospect(even I forgot to put him in my Top 50) but keeps putting up solid outings.

The Rogers Bros pitched a scoreless inning each with Tyler getting 3 GB outs.

Blake Sabol C- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .556.  Sabol is 5 for 9 on the spring and all 5 hits have been XBH's.  3 doubles and 2 HR's.

Steven Piscotty RF- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .444.  Seems like if Austin Slater's elbow doesn't come around, Piscotty might have the inside track at the roster spot.  On the other hand, Piscotty's defensive metrics are awful and he does not seem to be an option for CF.  Conforto and Haniger have both played CF in small samples but with poor defensive metrics.

Sean Manaea LHP- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.71.  There might be some bad BAPIP luck in his line.  Two of the runners who scored reached base on groundball hits.  The third run scored on a WP by an inherited runner off Jonathan Bermudez LHP.

5 of the runs in the Rangers game were given up by Daniel Tillo LHP in 0.1 IP.

There was an Ismael Munguia sighting in the home game.  He went 2 for 2 with a HR.  The HR came in Munguia's first AB since 2021 and ended a 14-pitch AB.

Alex Wood LHP makes his first spring start tomorrow afternoon against the D'Backs in Scottsdale.

  1. Ismael Munguia is a player, when healthy.
Look up his monthly stats for 2021 at Eugene after May. incredible. His walks and singles can turn into doubles - he'll steal bases.

Doc, you have a lot of reports on him during that time, he had incredible streaks, like a dozen hits in 3 games.
    Too bad he bats left.

    1. I remember Ismael Munguia well. He's always been a sleeper to root for. Even though it's a hitter friendly ballpark, the HR today is encouraging. If he has just enough pop to keep the pitchers honest, he could be a nice CF/leadoff hitter type or reserve OF option in the future.

    2. Munguia is a sparkplug type of player but he's tracking to be at best a 5th outfielder. This year he's got to improve upon the 3.6% walk rate to have a future as a leadoff hitter, let alone as any kind of MLB player.

    3. ....which is why he has to have at least a little power, to keep pitchers honest.

  2. Are the Giants ignoring what is happening with YtY: his peak was the shortened 2020 Covid year, but across the board he has declined since. Without Slater to take the load against LHP, he will be overused and overexposed against lefties while deteriorating even against righties when pushed to play 148 games last year.
He's not the young kid he never was – a rookie at 28-29 yo and a breath of fresh air, he's now the 2nd oldest position player on the Giants.
Even boy-wonder Hunter Pence deteriorated when pushed to play 134 games @ 34 yo after barely hanging on @ 33.
Giants won't look good in Oracles spacious CF...

    1. I think I commented after the 2019 season that we might have just seen YtY's peak season. He was better in a shortened 2020 but has been sliding since. then at some point this offseason I recall saying the Giants need to get a player who can go get it in CF. Those are hard to find, though. Maybe I'll look through the depth charts around the league and see if there are any trade/waiver wire possibilities out there.

    2. Any chance Bryce Johnson might do? Didn't make much of an impact in the handful of MLB ABs he had last year, but if he could put together a decent OBP he would otherwise fit the bill. If he doesn't make the 25-man roster it would be decent of them to release him to see if he can actually get a shot somewhere.

    3. Maybe the new rules will make players with Bryce Johnson's skill set relevant again? His big limitation is he's shown way less power than Ismael Munguia.
