Spring Training Game Wrap 3/13/2019: Mariners 8 Giants 4

A 20 MPH wind was blowing out to RF at game time so the only surprise here is the score wasn't a lot higher.   Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 4.  BA= .238.  I don't have a game log for spring training but this is at least a 2 game hit streak for Duggar.

Mac Williamson LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .212.  Mac drove in 2 runs with a single in the 3-run 3'rd inning.

Aramis Garcia 1B- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .190.  Aramis is hitting just .190 but his OBP is a more respectable .320.

Rene Rivera C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .364.  Rivera as reserve C with Aramis Garcia starting the season in Sacramento is probably what makes the most sense.  Of note though is Buster Posey was scratched from a DH role in this game due to "general soreness" in the hip area after catching 5 innings the night before.

Austin Slater DH- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .192.  There is an opportunity for Slater to grab at least a platoon role in RF if he can hit a lick over the next week.

Derek Holland LHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.25.  The secondary stats look good and the wind was howling.

Tyler Beede RHP 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 2 WP.  ERA= 5.40.  Rough outing for Beede.  We'll chalk this one up to the wind, but can he bounce back?

It's D'Rod's turn to start today against the D'Backs at Salt River Fields.

MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a couple of immediate rule changes affecting rosters.  For 2019, the waiver trade deadline of August 31 will be eliminated so all trading will cease after July 31.  Then, in 2020, rosters will expand to 26 with a maximum of 13 pitchers.  September rosters will shrink from 40 to 28 with a maximum of 14 pitchers.  I am in favor of both of these rules changes.

  1. Additional info this morning on the rule changes includes addition of the 3-batter rule starting in 2020. Relief pitchers must face at least 3 batters barring injury. No definite word on whether finishing an inning after 1 or 2 batters also counts.

    1. recording 3 outs, as with a DP and a routine out, though facing only two batters , makes more sense

    2. What if a pitcher comes in and can’t get anybody out?

    3. There should be a lot of exceptions to this rule. What if the RP comes in and throws 8 balls in a row? Do we need to watch him throw 4 more balls?
It may be better to impose the rule at the aggregate level. Like you cannot use more than 3 pitchers for any 9 batter sequence. It will serve the purpose of speeding up the game. At the same time, things can still get interesting with a good manager.

    4. okay three batters or three outs, whichever comes first,, but really we often see relievers, maybe esp sinkerballers, who enter with the bags loaded and the record a DP and then get a third out ,,, if that reliever only faced two batters why should he start the next inning? and what if his spot in the lineup will bat in the next inning? I have to think the MLB planners will account for this common scenario

    5. What if it is the 9th inning and your RP has not faced 3 batters. Does the game continue? :p

  2. 4 of the 8 Mariner runs were inherited runners (1 for Black, 3 for Venditte).
17 SF on-base, not much clutch hitting, RISP: Mission Impossible.
    Appearance by Manul Geraldo: interesting
    Disappearance by Buster: ominous

    1. This is the second time this spring Buster is reported to have "general hip soreness." Could he start season on DL?

  3. What if a closer comes in with two out in the ninth? Must he still face three batters?

  4. 2 weeks to go -- do the Giants look ready to you?
Lets start from scratch now, pitchers will be ready in 2 weeks. All eleventy of them. With a shaky rotation after Bumgarner, Bochy will cobb together another 4 probably Shark, DROD, Holland, and Pomeranz, and the pen looks okay with an abundance of choices.
Other than Panik with Solarte as a backup with Rivera and ?? catching, isn't everything else opaque? Of course Busted Hip Posey will be there and perennial this is the year Belt and Forever Crawford and Who Else Longoria are penciled in.
Where are the new guys? Duggar has probably been just good enough to put in CF, Williamson in left or Who Else, and Parra wins the new vet in camp.
    This is a terrible team!
Without hitting an inside straight, this is NL West 5th place.
I want to be positive, help me!
