Spring Training Game Wrap 3/14/2019: D'Backs 3 Giants 0

The Giants continued a disheartening trend which is rapidly turning ominous as they mustered just 3 hits and 4 baserunners against the D'Back at Salt River Fields.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik, Evan Longoria, Mac Williamson- 1 hit each with a 2B for Longoria.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.15.  DRod looks like he's right no schedule.  Tough to win when your team backs you with 0 runs, though.

Travis Bergen LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/1.  ERA= 0.00.  If Bergen doesn't make the roster, you have to wonder why Farhan bothered to participate in the Rule 5 Draft.  He's had a tremendous spring.

Mark Melancon RHP-1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 11.57.  Last appearance was somewhat encouraging with 3 GB outs.  This one, not so much.  Ugh!  At this point, Melancon is really starting to look like a sunk cost.

The Giants play the Angels in Scottsdale tomorrow afternoon with Jeff Samardzija facing lefty Dillon  Peters.

Clarification on the 3-batter rule to take effect in 2020.  A pitcher must face at least 3 batters except for injury or finishing a inning.

  1. Every team will have a down day!
    Yesterday was a REAL downer.
    Upside: Buster caught 5 innings.
Lets guess that he's batting 2nd in the lineup not so that he can hit into double plays when the leadoff batter singles in the top of the first, at least the 2nd time this Spring, but for him to get 3 ABs as early as possible. It worked because he struck out to end the 6th and he was out of the game.
This staring team, with the exception of Maybin playing CF against a RHP, could be the SF starters this year, adding to the "down-ness" of the day.
Maybin, BTW, has reverse splits -- he's not the RHB CF replacement for Duggar: he hits righties better than lefties!
What exactly is he doing on the roster? Depth? Flexibilty? Defense? Power? OBP? Speed? Batting Average? Doesn't strike out?
Maybin, 32 yo in 3 weeks, is none of the above. He even undermined his "outstanding citizen" creds this month!
Good news is he has a minor league contract and unless opium becomes popular in the FO, he won't cost much.

    1. I fear that Maybin will be Austin Jackson 2019. Any at bats he gets takes them away from somebody more deserving.

Btw, could Melancon be dfaed sometime soon? Please?

    2. Much much worse than taking at bats away he's taking a 25-man roster spot!

  2. I think that the key to the Giants offense this season is Buster's production. They're getting on base in front of him. He just need to pick them up. Ditto, on a smaller scale, with Crawford.

  3. I am expecting solid pitching, especially from the bullpen. Glad that Vendite was sent down after a poor spring performance and not just kept because of his ambidexterity and because he was obtained early by Z. Shows Farhan is not stubborn or wed to players...

Keys are health and just solid seasons from ALL of Posey, Belt, Panik, Craw and Longo. could be too much to ask for, but not an impossibility.

Don't know what to say about the OF. I am looking forward to seeing MAC and DUGGAR get a long look but there are no guarantees there either...And none of the other kids have shown much, including Farhan's favorite Fergurson….Parra is probably the starting RF but would be perfect as a 4th OF...Hopefully, Z can somehow cobble together a deal with some of his pitchers for a decent OF. But not holding mu breath

  4. MLB.com

The Phillies had a scare on Friday afternoon, as new superstar Bryce Harper was plunked on the right foot by a 96-mph fastball from Blue Jays right-hander Trent Thornton.

Harper went to the ground in obvious pain, though he proceeded to get up and gingerly walk off the field. Shane Robinson entered the game for him as a pinch-runner.

Harper went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before the HBP. He is 0-for-5 with three walks in four games since signing a 13-year contract with Philadelphia.

  5. The non-stellar performance this spring by the Giants' outfield hopefuls almost guarantees Ferguson a job!
His OBP @ .321 is FIRST among OFers (20 or more AB's).
And he leads the entire team in SB's.
Sadly, there is not a better option than to keep him on the roster.
There are reasons to keep him: Rule 5 and he's fast!

    1. I have seen little to like in the guy...some speed and A bit of an eye (OBP of , WHAT, .280?) but doesnt seem anywhere near a major league bat..DOnt think this is a guy you keep just because of the Rule 5 status..you keep him if he earns a job...not so far

  6. I had such high hopes for Melancon but I think you’re right Dr. B, he is a sunk cost. I remember a game that he saved early in 2017 against the Cubs in Wrigley and thinking that he definitely could’ve made a difference in the 2016 playoffs. Given his current performance though I think the best decision would be to DFA him. He will surely pass through waivers given his contract. Then to the best of my understanding the Giants could then chose to assign him to the minors and then he would have to accept that assignment to keep his contract. If that happens and he is taken off the roster it would create some flexibility for the bullpen. Unless he has a big turnaround in the last 7-10 days of Spring Training, putting him on the opening day roster would not make much sense. And I would hate to risk losing a promising bullpen arm like Trevor Gott who is out of options. If I’m mistaken about the DFA and contract process, anyone feel free to correct me.
3 weeks into Spring Training I definitely feel good about our pitching staff as a whole. And am optimistic about our infield. It’ll be an interesting 10-12 days before opening day to see how things turn out with the roster and to see if Farhan makes any significant moves to improve our OF production. It’s his last chance to make a significant move to help this team compete for the first 4 months of the season.

  7. Detroit has lost phenom SP Michael Fulmer for a while - maybe they'd like to swap N Castellanos for one of SF's extra SPs- Stratton or Blach? General fan mood is they can't possibly keep Melancon over Bergen and I agree. I also think Mike Gerber has outplayed Maybin AND Ferguson by a lot. It's a shame he bats LH, but I hope he sticks instead of either of those other two.
