Game Wrap 3/30/2019: Giants 3 Padres 2

The Giants lineup broke through with a 3-spot in the 6'th inning to support a strong effort by the pitching staff led by Dereck Rodriguez and Reyes Moronta.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4, HBP, SB(1).  BA= .273.  Duggar was the perfect leadoff hitter reaching base 3 times and stealing a bag.  His leadoff single started the 6'th inning rally.  BTW, the HBP grazed his nose.  Yikes!

Yangervis Solarte SS/3B- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .300.  Solarte had a rough day in the field but did his part at the plate with 2 doubles including one that drove in the first Giants run.  Gotta say, it does not look like Solarte has the arm to play on the left side on the IF as he just couldn't seem to get the ball all the way to Brandon Belt on throws to first.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 3. BA= .400.  Longo was in the middle of the Giants 3-run rally, but came out afterward as he was not running well.  On Postgame Live, Shawn Estes said he saw Longo rub his  hammy after a stint in the batting cage while watching the Padres batting practice feed, so the original injury may have happened in a previous game or practice situation.  We might be seeing a lot more of Pablo Sandoval in the near future.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.60.  DRod pitched a lot better than this line looks.  He allowed just 2 hits and 3 baserunners through 5 innings but gave up a double and single to start the 6'th.  He was replaced by Travis Bergen who came in to face Eric Hosmer and Hos ripped a 2-run double down the 1B line allowing the 2 inherited runners to score.  The long layoff in the top of the 6'th may have taken a bit of his edge off.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  OK, per Kruk, Moronta has a no-dot slider which may not have quite the break of Sergio Romo's but then Romo did not have 98 MPH cheese to back it up.  Padres hitters weren't seeing the slider and couldn't catch up with the heat even when they knew it was coming.  Moronta was also throwing a changeup in spring training which I did not see tonight, but wow!  I think this guy is going to be the Closer before the year is out, although he may be more valuable in higher leverage situations earlier in the game.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Smith earns his first Save of the season and did not have any trouble against 3 RH batters.

Jeff Samardzija tries to extend the momentum and gain a split in the 4-game series tomorrow.  The good news is the Giants are facing a RHP.   The bad news is he is Chris Paddack, who some analysts think is the top rookie pitcher in baseball and he is coming off a great spring training.

*********************************************************************************

Michael Reed came in to play LF as a defensive replacement for Conner Joe.  He promptly crashed into Brandon Crawford's back on a tweener pop-fly and appeared to injure a tooth on the back of Crawford's head.  Let's just say, Crawford's body language was not at all friendly after the collision.  BTW, Crawford came in to play SS when Longoria left the game and Solarte slid over to 3B.

Late update on Evan Longoria:  The injury was a foul ball off his calf.  It was a bit sore but coming out of the game was more of a precaution than a necessity.  Probably doesn't feel good but is probably better news than a hammy strain.

  1. Nice win, Drod pitched great, glad he won. Morontha is a beast, and Will Smith is a good, underrated closer. Read something interesting about Chis Paddock that he had TJ in 2016 and is still building up his innings. Padres need to go slow with him.

  2. Moronta sure showed closer stuff tonight.

Am I crazy or has Bochy PH Pablo twice from the RIGHT side the past two games? His splits are criminal from the right side for the past couple of seasons. (Hitting around .150, OPS around .400) Thought it was a special case on Friday, but Saturday too. 1 for 2 though...

Nice win for boys tonight. Great to see Derek win in front of Dad.

  3. A win for the Giants - such a good bullpen and a steady start by D Rod. re: LF - I read that the Giants likely haven't exposed Mac to waivers yet - they have 7 days after DFA to trade or waive - can they pull him back in and get rid of these two imposters already. WTF. Over-tinkering if you ask me. Or is Z the mastermind organizing some early tanking to hurry up his purge plans?

  4. Wow. Moronta was NASTY......Smith quite good also..At least Evans and the former regime left FARHAN with a darn good bullpen and options in the minors..DROD looks like the same pitcher of last year, which is a good thing!

Good to see a little life in the bats..Solarte's bat was a good pickup..but I'm afraid he is gonna lsoe some games defensively..Hope the former outweighs the latter!

This JOE and Reed thing is just nauseating..Yeah, I know they supposedly can take walks in the minors but, SO FAR, tHey just look totally overmatchd at the plate at this level...and a liability in the field where they have been played...I have read that they are gonna get a LONG look...which I guess they have to given what Farhan has provided..but with the dearth of power on this squad, MAC couldn't have gotten that same chance just to see?

Hey, Is it possivle, to get MADBUM's bat into the linueo by playing him in the OF and constantly shifting him and the D so he is protected? Just kidding..

Pablo has had statisticaly bad Splits from the right the past few years but in camp he was hitting real well from that side.hope that remains the terend this year..

I really like the way Duggar plays the game and his ABs..

  5. It's been 3 games so it's way too early to write the corner OFers off, but man they do look overmatched. How many times can you strike out with the bat still on your shoulder? I understand the high OBPs in the minors, but you are dealing with major major control now and need to get a hit at some point

  6. Belt should have picked both throws by Solarte in the dirt and he whiffed on both. Belt faithfuls rave about his defense and also how we couldn’t afford to put him in LF because of how important he is at 1B but I need my 1B to make those plays.

Farhans flops as I like to refer to them dont seem to be enjoying much success and it looks pretty obvious by the body language of the entire team and coaching staff that nobody likes these guys. Crawford didnt even turn around to ask Reed if he was OK after the crash and did well to mask how annoyed he seemed by the play. Solarte and Parra are both Panda’s recruits so no credit to Farhack for them. Reed, Joe, and Bergen on the other hand have his fingerprints all over them and all 3 have looked like total crap!

An argument could be made that this team is clearly worse because of who Farhack has brought in and if he hadn’t done so much damn tinkering we could potentially be better overall with Slater and Mac for example in the OF instead of these 2 poor bastards. The chemistry is clearly suffering as the players and coaches are showing their disdain for their new leadership and the clearly bad decisions that have been made. I dont think we have seen the worst it is going to get either and the result could end up being a soap opera. Is this secretly what Farhan wants? He isn’t an idiot apparently so he has to know the affects his moves would make on a veteran team like this right?

My guess is that the moves he has made and the lack of support he has given this team is 100% intentional. He has planned to clean house from the start and his moves have been designed to help move along the process. Get ready for a 5-6 year rebuild after all the core players and coaches have left. In the next year or two this team will be completely unrecognizable.

    1. Farhan's moves smack of PANIC. All those players added and then dropped. We could have Joyce and Mac out there in the OF. Why is Melancon still on the 25? F. had no qualms about DFAing fan favorite Mac and yet he has cold feet about DFAing Melancon who was a ST disaster?

  7. Reyes Moronta needs a nickname and I have a few to throw out. My first would be Reyes “The Mule” Moronta simply because he does all the heavy lifting and seems to always be there to get us out of jams. He isnt a horse since he can’t go 8 innings strong but he could damn sure be a mule and a really really valuable one at that! If not Th Mule then lets just call him “Shrek”. I dont think i have to explain that one...

  8. I understand this is not an open game. We are in 3rd inning of the Sunday game and I note that Reed and Joe did not start! Kudos to Bochy for starting Solarte and Parra instead - I hope Bosh sends a message to Z that he will not play or at least start some of the players Z has put on the 25 man roster.
