Spring Training Game Wrap 3/11/2019: Giants 4 Dodgers 1

Joey Bart broke a 1-1 tie in the 9'th inning with a resounding 3-run double to back another strong performance by Giants pitchers.  Key Lines:

Joey Bart- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .500.  OK, can we find a leftfielder's glove and just let the Joey Bart Era start on Opening Day?  I mean, how good is this kid, anyway?  And how great is it to hit a 3-run double in the 9'th to beat the Dodgers?

Chris Stratton RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.40.  Strong start for Stratton who is out of options so there is a looming big decision for the Giants.

Nick Vincent RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 2/0.  ERA= 4.91.  Interesting veteran reliever but where are the Giants going to put him?

Ty Blach LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.24.  Giants play the Dodgers 7 games by May 1.  Can we please keep Ty Blach around at least until then?  He is kryptonite for the Bums.

Trevor Gott RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Is Trevor Gott a dark horse to not just make the team but be the closer?  He has finished both of his last 2 appearances.

Madison Bumgarner makes his 4'th start of the spring tonight against the Brewers in Scottsdale.

The Giants optioned RHP Shaun Anderson, OF Chris Shaw, IF Abiatal Avelino, IF Ryder Jones, IF Breyvic Valera and RHP Sam Coonrod to minor league camp.  They also reassigned RHP Enderson Franco and RHP Keyvius Sampson to minor league camp.  They still have 20 cuts to go to get to an Opening Day roster of 25.

C Steven Vogt took a big step caching 5 innings in a minor league game.  He has been one of the Giants best hitters this spring out of the DH slot.

  1. Can Black Bart play 1B, we all know Fragile Belt will break a finger nail pretty soon. Maybe the New BB can steal some games for SFG?

  2. Joey Bart will be the third batter in the inning. The Oracle Park Scoreboard lights up"Next Bart Train Now Apoaching. Arrival Approximately 4 Minutes." As the walks into batter's box the Scoreboard flashes San Francisco and we hear the familiar beep beep of the Bart Train Horn.

  3. One thing Farhan probably knew about the Giants before he came aboard was that Blach can beat the Dodgers.

Adam Jones had a stretch -- age 26-28 -- when he averaged bWAR of 4.5. Played fairly good D through 29 yo, then fell off precipitously until becoming a distinct liability last year @ 32. His WAR (v age) traces a near perfect bell curve and he is far along the aging process to a point he may not even have a replacement WAR if he's not a DH. The collective criticism by beat writers of the owners' "greed" for not wanting to pay him millions is anachronistic at best and is certainly self serving for those who just want to cultivate good feeling with the players they cover.
Perhaps players should make more younger -- there's good argument for that when they are under the thumb of management until arbitration kicks in -- but Adam Jones has earned nearly $100,000,000 in his career playing baseball. Poor guy.

And lets wait until BB9 has an appendectomy or at least a concussion before savaging him.

  4. Pavs recommends to those who want to see Bart play in San Jose to catch him either in April or May. He won't be there that long. Exciting stuff!

  6. One possible reason that Zaidi's trade scenarios aren't happening is that Keuchel and Kimbrel are still out there and represent a competing SP and RP option for those clubs shopping for those positions. Once the free agents are off the market, the shoppers that missed out can come back to Zaidi with offers. It'd be nice to make those trades early for Dyson, WSmith, Watson and Bumgarner - that makes room in the bullpen for the new RPS and in the rotation for Stratton/Blach and settle the pitching staff while stocking up on OF hitter prospects. Unless of course SF is playing .600 ball with the 'core' staff. Stratton being out of options means either he is going to be traded or else someone else is traded to make room for him.

  7. I cannot understand people who cannot praise a person without taking a shot at another.

Do we have any reports on Bart's catching?
I don't want him to piss off Bumgarner; we need him for many years to come.

    1. Here is the answer:
      https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/joey-bart-needs-improve-part-his-game-mike-krukow-says

"As Giants fans start dreaming of him in San Francisco, though, it's a good time to pump the breaks and realizes there are still developments that need to be made in the minor leagues."

  8. Blach maintains high strike-out rates into late spring. That is noteworthy.
