Bay Bridge Series Game Wrap 3/25/2019: A's 5 Giants 4

For some reason the Giants and A's decided to play a game that didn't count in a driving Northern California rainstorm. Thankfully, I have not seen any reports of injuries coming out of it from either team.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .326.  Duggar should have the starting CF job locked up.

Erik Kratz C- 1 for 2.  BA= .258.  Kratz was acquired yesterday and appears to have the inside track for the backup catcher role. His single in the 7'th inning drove in 2 runs.

Michael Reed RF/CF- 0 for 3, BB, Assist(3B).  BA= .227.  Late acquisition fighting for a reserve OF role.  Showed off his arm from RF with an assist at 3B.

Tom Murphy PH/DH- 1 for 2.  BA= .267.  Murph was acquired from the Rockies earlier in the day throwing some uncertainty into the Roster Churn.  He's out of options, so do the Giants keep 3 catchers on the roster?  Will Farhan figure out how to get Murphy to AAA and still keep him?  Word is the Dereck Rodriguez will start the season in Sacramento.  Will Farhan figure out how to essentially stream a SP or two all season effectively lengthening his roster to 26 or 27 players?  That's essentially what the Dodgers did for the past 2 seasons.

Connor Joe- LF/1B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .245.  Will Joe's added versatility be enough to beat out Pablo Sandoval's experience?

Shaun Anderson RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 1.69.  Anderson showed some big league moxie pitching his way out of a first inning jam with just 1 run allowed then retiring his final 7 batters.  Kruk and Kuip were raving about his stuff as he walked off the field.  Looks like the Giants have a legit SP prospect here.

Ty Blach LHP- 0.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.08.  Blach's last 2 appearances have not gone well.  I read that he has an option, so it looks like Sacramento is in his future.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  3 K's and 3 GB outs in his last 2 appearances.  I want more of Tyler Rogers.

Up Next:  Drew Pomeranz was a late scratch, presumably due to the weather, and will team up with Jeff Samardzija to work the Bay Bridge finale today.

As the Roster Churns:  As mentioned above, the Giants claimed C Tom Murphy off waivers from the Rockies.  I really like Murph's power.  I even wrote him up as a Breakout Candidate for my Fantasy Focus a couple of years ago.  Ironically, it's his defense that has held him back.  He's out of options and it is really unclear what the Giants think they are going to do with him.  Try to sneak him through waivers at the last minute?  Carry 3 catchers on the 25 man roster?  Lengthen the roster by streaming SP's between Sacramento and SF?  Stay tuned.  I will say, if Farhan figures out how to keep Murph and tap into his power, I will be impressed!

The Giants solved one roster crunch by trading Chris Stratton to the Angels for a big, hard throwing LHP Williams Jerez.  I saw Jerez pitch on TV over the weekend and he can bring it.  Per Fangraphs, he averaged 95+ MPH on the FB last year.  Jerez has options, which Stratton did not, so he can be stashed in Sacramento and gives the Giants additional LHP depth.  This is a decent return for Stratton who could still blossom with the Angels.

And finally, Aramis Garcia was optioned to Sacramento, an expected move.

  1. 3 catchers!?

I don't mind losing Panda as much as losing Mac; I hope they find a way to keep Williamson's RHB on the 25-man roster. He's still the kind of player that the Giants should be taking a chance on in a rebuild year with bad OF options - bat with pop by an injury stunted/delayed prospect.

I'm glad Garcia will be catching 'full-time' in Sacto rather than riding the pine with SF. But, man, these catching moves are a lot.

  2. I dont mind the pick up of Murphy, buyt this 3 catcher thing is a bit crazy..Not to mention VOGT has beasiclly been promised a spot once he's healthy ( a few weeks?? a month??)..WHo kows what that meas for Kratz and urphy...And Garcia.

Sorry to see Stratton go but the Giants were kinda painted into a corner..Stratton can be really good at time and I truly hope he excels for the Angels..not to rub it in to the Guants but becasue i like the guy..I have a feeling I will be saying the same thing about Mac Williamson soon becasue of the likse of Connor Joe and Reed!

I dont know if the Giantts want to win at all this year..maybe they just want the vets to play well and raise their traade value somehow..but if they do want to win, it's gonna be real hard without adding an OF that cna mean anything..We'll see

As for the pitching and the rumblings of DROD to the minors at the start...Would that use up one of his options? if so, does it make sense just to keep a Blach or another releiver or possibly a utility player/OF for that little time period?----Im figuring...Smith, Watson, Bergen,Moronta, Meancon,Vincent, Gott, and DYson are alrwady a lock..

  3. Giants in Rebuilding Mode, getting new faces to replace those that we know have under performed for a few years now - known quality issues. I won't miss Panda, Melancon, Mac, even Craw and Belt.

Trading the strong Stable of RP is also an option as is trading Bum.

Z seems to be trying everything he can to make us forget about the 2015-2018 Seasons and I applaud him for it.............dude never seems to sleep vs the previous who always seemed asleep during 15-18.

    1. I simply don't understand the ongoing delusion some folks seem to have that we are witnessing a Giants Rebuild. What rebuild? What members of the veteran core have been traded? What top 100 or even 200 prospects have been acquired? Any pronouncements from Zaidi or anyone else in the organization about rebuilding? There is no rebuild!!!!

If churning through dumpster dives is Farhan's version of a rebuild, then I call it a major fail so far.

    2. Wow. What have you done for me lately?

    3. I give Farhan credit for building depth at AAA, and I think he will trade big names in mid-season. At the same time, I agree I cannot see much that looks like rebuilding.

    4. Rome wasn't built in a Day, Z is awake, aggressive and knowledgeable. We will soon have a Team we don't recognize, the unanswered question is how will the Team respond to what is going on?

Will they pout or will they rededicate themselves to winning?

      Z will banish the losers / underachiever's.

    5. I'm going to take this last anon comment as satire.

  4. If the vets perform -- from the pitching core to the C/IF -- and stay reasonably healthy, the Giants are not a bad team even without an offensive OF.
Be interesting if Parra rebounds to his early days but more likely this spring was an aberration and he's well down the aging curve -- except his D looks reasonable. Can't expect musch there and Duggar will take his lumps.
Does LF matter? Put good D there and let the Core-5 supply the offense.

    1. i worry about Posey and Bumgarner. The season could turn on their productivity.

    2. I agree the potential to contend is there, but I think you have to have at least 20 dingers out of LF for the Giants to be serious contenders.

    3. Without solid LF production, there is no margin of error. The pitchers need to pitch up to the expectations year long without any injuries; the core 5 should stay healthy, and play above their career averages. It can happen, but not likely.

    4. If the Veterans stay healthy ........that is a BIG " IF ", especially with Bum, Posey, Belt, Crawford, Panik, Samardzija, Pomeranz, Williamson, Longoria, Duggar..........a lot of brittle Players in that group.

  5. If Giants want to go for a 4th catcher (5th? 6th?), Susac was sent to minors by Orioles.
If they can sneak either Murphy or Kratz thru waivers and keep the other on the 25-man, if Posey falters they'd have a good offense/defense platoon.
With Garcia getting everyday reps in Sacramento, there's Vogt when he can throw again.
    Catching hydra replaces Hundley.

  6. Williamson is not starting today either. I assume he will not be on the 25-man. Disappointing, but expected.

    1. I'm not tied to Mac if there is an obviously better option out there, but I hate to see him dumped for either Reed or Joe. I still believe that of all the current players on the 40 man roster, Mac is by far the most likely to rise up and hit 30 dingers.

  7. Stratton traded because Shark is kept in the rotation. I prefer Stratton over Shark.

    1. That is just silly. Stratton will be extremely fortunate to have anything close to the success Shark had had when healthy.
