Spring Training Game Wrap 3/16/2019: Giants 10 Padres 3

6 of the Giants 8 position starters today will probably be out there on Opening Day and they.....well, they performed they way it's drawn up jumping out to a 9-1 lead by the 6'th inning and cruising the rest of the way to a Win.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .310.  Duggar is swinging a hot bat and quickly erasing doubts about being the starting CF on Opening Day.

Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 3, BB.  BA= .517.  Panik started the spring hot and has never cooled off.  Is this the year he wins a batting title? California Dreaming!

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .200.  Yeah you read the 3B right.   Buster hit a soft liner into the L-CF gap that Josh Naylor whiffed. Buster chugged around the bases while the CF chased it down.  On top of that, Buster caught 6 innings and the plan is for him to catch again tomorrow.

Brandon Crawford SS- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .200.  Crawford is another regular who's scuffled.  Hey!  I've always said its way better to get hot at the end of spring training than the beginning!

Pablo Sandoval 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .241.  Pabs is going to be the reserve CI.

Yangervis Solarte 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .308.  Solarte is going to be the reserve MI.

Gerardo Parra RF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .273.  Parra will likely be the starting RF but played LF today while Mac DH'd and Maybin played RF.

Mac Williamson DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .256.  Mac has raised his BA over the past several games.  Maybe he's heating up just in time?

Cameron Maybin RF- 0 for 4.  BA= .154.  Hmm.... maybe Maybin isn't the 4'th OF?  Giants are sure acting like they want him to be.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.11.  Pretty good outing for Suarez who will start the season in Sacramento.

Chris Stratton RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.50.  Stratton can be maddeningly inconsistent, but there's enough upside I don't want to see him go to another organization.  Ty Blach doesn't have the eye-popping stuff or stats but he's a lefty who can go multiple innings and he owns the Dodgers.  I say keep 'em both!

Tony Watson/Will Smith LHP's- 1 scoreless IP each.  The lefty pair are scheduled to work B2B games for the first time this spring with round 2 tomorrow.

Steven Okert LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.43.  I am not sure if Okert has an option or not, but he doesn't have a ghost of a chance of making the team what with Smith, Watson, Bergen and Blach all ahead off him on the lefty reliever depth chart.  I have to say, Okert's ups and downs have not come at the right time for him.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner makes his 5'th Start of the spring tomorrow against the Royals and Brad Keller in Scottsdale.  Expect a significant cutdown after tomorrow's game.  It's getting serious now.

  1. If the Giants keep Stratton and Blach as long relief L/R there are only six spots left in the bullpen. Watson Smith Moronta Bergen Dyson Gott?

    1. Yep. I think Melancon starts the season on the DL.

    2. Hey Dr. B,
I definitely think there is enough of an injury history with Melancon that they could find a reason to put him on the DL. But if Melancon doesn’t view it as a legitimate DL placement and more of a phantom placement do you think he’l agree to it? With the current relationship between the players and owners I wouldn’t be surprised if players do not agree with any phantom DL stints.

    3. The one guy being forgotten here is NICK VINCENT. We have not seen alot of him in games so far but he has been decent when in.but doesnt mean the Giants dont like what they have seen in CAMP..And he has been a very good reliver IN THE MAJORS the last three years...Just one more qaulity major league arm for the bullpen ..even if he eas only signed to a minor lrague deal, not sure the giants just want to let him go or send him to the minors....Maybe another candidate for DL??? And is there gonna be a trade or using the relevers for an OF which would also help this logjam?

    4. Nick Vincent has not been as impressive as Trevor Gott. There are only so many roster spots available.

    5. I tend to believe Melancon is not right physically and may not ever be again. I would think he would rather work on getting well in camp than be a mop-up pitcher who is only used in blow-out games. He's still going to get paid.

    6. I agree on Gott vs Vincent as far as the games have gone..And Vincent can be sent down to the minors...but he's still a good major league reliever that would not be out of place on the opening day roster epecially if moves are made or if things change (perfromance/injury) a little the next 10 days or so..

    7. Doh - I just read your post from the day before where you named the exact same bullpen, Dr B - thanks for humoring me. I think Vincent makes the lineup if someone is traded out. But Mac might be blossoming into the RH hitting OF we need - starting to make good contact and when the power connects? Boom - the missing piece.

  2. Oh, and CarGo signed a minor league deal with the Indians with an April opt-out, $2 M if he makes the MLB team with $1 M in incentives. Much like the Giants, the Indians OF badly needs a boost.

  3. 4th OF turned into a race to the bottom. What are the options besides Maybin? Gerber, Ferguson, Solarte, Belt for LF?
I thought Hanson would see time on OF in the spring; did not happen. I read Shaw would move back to 1B. Can somebody claim the position please?

  4. IF ST is to mean something the OF is Duggar, Williamson, Parra, and ...
    MIKE GERBER!
Since a hot ST shouldn't be THE determining factor, Gerber (7-18, .389, 4 Ks) is out and Boch will get Maybin.
If I were choosing, it would be poor Ferguson until he proves he can't hit (if he hasn't already) and the Giants need the slot for another BAT because they're playing up to California Dreamin'!..

  5. A good reason for keeping Parra besides for his ability to hit for average (a little) is he'll have the BEST RF arm the Giants have had since, since, since Nate the Great?
He doesn't bring power (like everyone else Giant) or particularly good OB skills (low walks) or speed to cover spacious RF, but he is a potential asset that could be tradeable down the line if he flirts on the up side of .300
    Is he a regular?
Not by BaseballReference standards. His last 2.0 (exactly) fWAR was combined stats (2 teams) in 2015. You have to go back to 2013 to find a very good year when he was 26 yo -- if more than a 1.5 @ 32 yo is expected it WILL be California Dreamin'..
It's a commentary on the sad state of affairs for SF OFers that he's even in the mix for a starting job.
IMO, he should be cut: he'll add very little (a win or 2) and use a valuable 25-man slot..

  6. Henry Schulman reminds us that today's team against KC is eerily similar to Game 7 of the 2014 WS:
    P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS
Way to go, Boch, in your face..
