Spring Training Game Wrap 3/9/2019: Cubs 8 Giants 0

Ugh.  The hardest part of blogging is writing up a game wrap on a stinker like this.  What can I say? The Giants were dominated in every phase of the game, and it was in Scottsdale.  Key Lines:

Drew Ferguson CF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(3).  BA= .167.  Still rooting for Fergie to make this team, one way or the other.  Not the greatest of lines but the best on the day for Giants hitters.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .389.  Belt was the only other Giants batter to reach base twice.

Henry Ramos PH/DH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .176.  Only XBH of the game for the Giants.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.40.  This is a better line than the R and ER allowed would make you think.  DRod was actually dominant, as you can see from the K's and BB's, except for a run of bad BABIP luck in the 2'nd inning in which he allowed all 4 hits.  3 of them were groundballs through the IF with one ticking off the glove of Brandon Crawford.  After the game, Bruce Bochy announced that DRod would be part of the rotation.  Barring injury, of course, the other 4 would seem to be locked in including Madison Bumgarner, Jeff Samardzija, Derek Holland and Drew Pomeranz.  That leaves Chris Stratton fighting for his place on the roster as a long reliever as he is out of options.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 9.82.  Maybe their is hope for Melancon?  The GB's are encouraging.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants split the squad tomorrow with Jeff Samardzija staying in Scottsdale to face the Rangers and Drew Smyly.  Andrew Suarez makes the trek to Mesa for face Jesus Luzardo and the A's.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants did more trimming of the squad as they sent RHP Carlos Navas and RHP Kieren Lovegrove to minor league camp.  The Giants need to trim 30 more by Opening Day to get down to a 25 man active roster.

  1. That might leave Chris Stratton as trade bait for that RH batting OF - although contract swap Samardjiza for W Myers wouldn't be such a bad thing, would it? Samardjiza just needs to look good tomorrow..then plug Stratton back into the rotation spot with Suarez and Blach still around for SP depth.

    1. Right now, Samardzija looks like a pretty good bet for a bounceback year with 180+ IP. I would rather take on Myers' contract than weaken the rotation. If the Giants get 2 more good years out of Shark, it will be a pretty good contract for them.

  2. True - but SD needs SPs - who would SF be willing to trade? Stratton? Suarez? Blach?

    1. Why would we want Myers that bad? I’d rather try to get whoever is left out between Reyes, Renfroe

    2. IDK, maybe because the Padres wouldn't trade Reyes or Renfroe?

I think either Stratton or Blach plus a non-roster reliever and a lower level prospect should be enough to get Myers, maybe less if the Giants take on all of his contract.

    3. If it got down to Stratton or Blach (+ whatever), who would the Giants rather NOT face during the season?
Stratton is out of options -- if he doesn't figure in the rotation (7 straight days of games to open the season), he'd be likely to be traded -- for anything. In that sense, Myers is good unless it loses Ferguson.
$15M AAV for 4 years isn't onerous and he'll probably earn it with just 2.1 WAR. OTOH, a 2.1 WAR isn't really what the Giants want although it's an improvement over every OFer they ran out there last year!
Maybe the Giants would settle for a combined 6 WAR (Myers, Duggar, and Williamson) from the OF!

    4. padres may try to play the waiver game to get stratton for nothing

    5. Padres might be in better shape with pitching than we think. D0 you see what Chris Paddack and Matt Strahm are doing in spring training so far?

    6. white sox could look to snatch stratton off of waivers

  3. 7 hits, 4 walks, 1 picked off, 10 LOB (team), 16 LOB (batters)
    RISP: 0-6
    Key hits: ZIP
    9-hole, lead-off, & 3 got on base 6 times.
Who and when was last Giant with 100+ RBIs?
    Buster: 103 in 2012.
It would be nice to have someone who drives runs home, would Wil Myers help? 94 RBIs in 2016 was good, otherwise no so much; career 2-outs, RISP .243/.324/.454; late and close .253/.358/.387
Myers would be a nice RH bat but could doom Ferguson if one of the other veterans is kept. Overall ~$15M/year AAV ($5.5M,$22.5M,$22.5M,$22.5M, $1M buyout) for 2.1 WAR (ZiPS projection, Steamer 2.0).
IMO, a mistake because he brings little (unlikely to be 2 WAR more than Maybin or Parra) and will cost a good player, most likely as good as SF gets, and squeezes . The Giants rotation isn't so set to give up anyone there, not even Stratton, and why would SD want him anyway?

In Z we trust -- have to think he saved the Giants from spending $350M for Harper.

    1. Party line is Zaidi is the guy who wanted Harper the most. Any reason you don’t believe that?

    2. No, I think he got snookered by Boras at the end.
      It's just seems un-Zaidi at $310M.
Wonder when Z knew where he had to go -- Philly's $330 plus another $20M (according to Boras) for CA taxes?
I don't believe that Harper was ever going anywhere but Philadelphia and Boras pulled a smart one to get LA and SF into the bidding to get more "stupid money" from John Middleton.
Harper in all his modesty has his sights on 45 HRs/year for 13 years to beat Bonds, unlikely enough in Philadelphia much less in SF! He's had 2 HRs in 19 games in SF, 1 every 33.5 ABs. 1 every 12.8 ABs in Philadelphia. Bonds for his career had 1 every 12.9 ABs.
Perhaps Zaidi was very afraid that the dodgers would pull off a last minute coup.

    3. OK, I get all that. I just don't see how you get from what we know about the Harper negotiations(which admittedly is limited) to the notion that Zaidi somehow "saved" the Giants from spending $350 M. I mean, how do you know it wasn't Larry Baer who finally reached his limit and called off the chase, or even Charles Johnson himself?

    4. IDK, but something stopped it.
They were stopped last year not by an unwillingness to spend money but Stratton said NO.
Different case, different year, but SF has the money, has the interest, and maybe no one but Harper stopped it: he like Stanton said NO.
Zaidi didn't do anything like this in LA or Oakland, did he? HUGEst contract? But he was in on this until something stopped it.
I WANT to believe it was Zaidi (we have him going forward we need him to be smart than everyone else) but I have no reason except I'd like to think sanity prevailed, although it was probably Harper's desire to hit lots of HRs and charm the pants off Phickle Philly Phans -- good luck!

  4. I'm ok with the Harper outcome, knowing that the FO went all in and offered a long term deal to Harper they were comfortable with. I didn't think the FO was all in offering a short term deal in the beginning, which was a waste of time. The Giants front office did nothing wrong in their Harper pursuit, with the high California tax rates and maybe the pitcher friendly Oracle Park being big hurdles. It seems to me that a 13 yr contract, no opt out, and a full no trade clause was shocking for even a great player like Harper to get. They need to concentrate their efforts on developing their own hitters instead. I'm encouraged that Zaidi was in favor of this, based on his past track record. Can't wait for the season to start!

  5. There was a time, like the end of last year, when Beede for Myers would sound like a good trade (for SF) -- but now?
Even someone SD doesn't need is worth something -- they're not taking Osish (Claimed by the way by WS) for Myers. There has to be perceived value -- does Stratton have that? Can he make the Beede transfiguration?
