Spring Training Game Wrap 3/15/2019: Giants 5 Angels 5

Giants and Angels battled to a tie in Scottsdale as Jeff Samardzija continued to ramp up for a bounceback season.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .280.  Duggar's bat has been showing signs of life and he had a multi-hit game today.  He appears to be closing in on a starting CF gig.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 2.  BA= .370.  If Belt can just stay healthy all season, I really think the rest will take care of itself.  It may be too late to realistically think about a breakout season for him, but I think his peak season might still be in front of him.

Anthony Garcia LF- 1 for 2, HR(2), BB, SF.   BA= .226.  Gotta wonder if Garcia could snatch a starting LF job away from Mac.  His minor league numbers are impressive.  Boch seems impressed with the bat, but sounded unconvinced about the D.

Henry Ramos DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .267.  Heliot's big bro has been quietly have better games at the plate.  If there is a 5'th OF job to be had, Henry might be pulling ahead of Drew Ferguson.

Drew Ferguson RF/CF- 0 for 4.  BA= .115.  Ouch!  Gotta say, I was impressed by Ferguson's minor league stats, but he has not found traction at the plate this spring.  Maybe if Farhan likes him, he can work out a trade or cash deal with the Astros to keep him and send him to Sacramento to get the bat going?

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 Ks, GO/AO= 8/3.  Shark actually allowed 2 runs in 5 IP, but was pulled when he gave up a leadoff single to start the 6'th inning.  That runner came around to score when Ty Blach brought his gas can with him in relief.

Ty Blach LHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.48.  There was some BABIP luck going here and a fielding error by Anthony Garcia in LF didn't help matters.  Blach settled down and went 2 innings.  For some reason, I like Blach better in the swingman role than Chris Stratton, but like Stratton better as 5'th SP.

Trevor Gott RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Gott has been finishing a lot of games.  This one was impressive because he started the top of the 9'th in a tie game with a runner on 2B and he left that runner stranded with 2 K's and a flyout.

Andrew Suarez will start tomorrow's game against the Padres in Scottsdale opposing RHP Cal Quantrill.

The Giants dropped their spring roster by 4 players by exercising options LHP/RHP Pat Venditte, OF Austin Slater and RHP Derek Law.  They also reassigned IF Zach Green who has some impressive moments at the plate this spring.

  1. Did I miss a memo? Why did each team start the ninth with a runner on second base?

I did like seeing Belt bunt the ball to third, with a runner on first, for one of his hits. Way to beat the shift.

    1. Spring Rules: Teams can start the 9'th inning of a tied game with runners on 2B if both teams agree. Apparently Bochy agreed to it and then either forgot to tell the players or Trevor Gott didn't get the memo.

  2. At this point in spring training, what and who do you think will be the composition of the Giants' 25-man roster for Opening Day?

    1. Hmmm....let's see. Just off the top of my head:

Starting 8: Posey, Belt, Panik, Longoria, Crawford, Mac, Duggar, Parra.

      Bench: Rivera, Sandoval, Solarte, Maybin.

Rotation: Bumgarner, Samardzija, Holland, Pomeranz, Rodriguez.

Bullpen: Smith, Watson, Dyson, Moronta, Bergen, Gott, Stratton, Blach.

Farhan will work out a trade with the Astros to keep Drew Ferguson and send him to Sacramento to get his bat going.

Melancon will start the season on the DL and in extended Spring Training.

      How's that?

    2. There still could be a trade or waiver wire pickup to bring in a LF if Mac doesn't pick it up soon.

    3. No Maybin, never! Parra is bad enough.
      Keep Ferguson.
Of the 3, he may not have a present but he's the only one with a potential future, including:
Time to say Adios Amigo to Panda and eat the leftover hats. Parting is sweet sorrow.
Bye-bye Melancon, too, but if rehab is feasible, OK, but no 25-man spot.
In with the new, out with the washed up vets! Maybin, Sandoval, Melancon, even Parra are not signs of winning, they are space/time fillers who are done.

    4. The 7:40 anonymous did not pose the original question.

Like your positioning on Gott, Bergen and Melancon.

    5. This is probably right, but I don’t get how they go into the season with Solarte as the only SS to back up Crawford.

    6. I don’t get why the multiple Anonymice keep using this duplicable, triplicable tag instead of generating pseudonyms that will individuate them and spare them the need for disclaimers. We’re all of us in fact anonymous, so we’re taking only pseudo-responsibility for our uncredentialed sounding off, of course; but what leads multiple blog-specific pundits to be bold enough to opine this or that, yet too timid to identify themselves as who they provisionally are? “Daddy,” as the Western belle used to say on *The Lone Ranger*, “who IS that masked man?”—or woman, girl, boy, priest, or nun behind each Anon?

    7. Sadly, I don't think younger guys have beaten the veterans for the 25-man. I am not sure even Mac earned his LF job yet. I remain optimistic about him, but I was hoping to see more. I agree that Maybin is the 4th best OF we have for now. I would favor the younger player when performances are comparable, but that is not the case here. I think Parra earned the RF job with his performance. He may not sustain it, but he has done well. If the youngsters cannot beat This version of Maybin, they need to think about what they can do differently.

    8. Crawford doesn't seem to be ready but Solarte is. Isn't Hanson a better IF backup than Sandoval?
Isn't it proven every year that ST is to get a player in shape but it's the wrong way to make irreversable changes like dumping players without options, especially "youngish" players.
To let Hanson or Ferguson or Williamson (or even Okert maybe) "go" to keep old vets around seems ludicrous for a team that aspires to contention only in the hearts of fervent fans with irrational exuberance.
Without some significant breakouts by multiple aging veterans, nothing that Maybin, Parra, Sandoval, Melancon, or several others with options is so valuable that it's worth losing a potential 2+ WAR of the future.

    9. Why not Hanson instead of Maybin. More speed and roster flexibility

    10. I think they will carry at least one bench player with OF as their primary position. Maybin can play all 3 OF positions.

I could see Hanson instead of Sandoval, but don't think that will be how it shakes out.

  3. A quick look at NL West Rivals - how can the Giants achieve more wins than Colorado? They signed Daniel Murphy to big contract, Arenado to record pact (and he is in prime) and now I see that 2nd round pick McMahon, their 24 YO first baseman is leading the Spring league in hitting. San Diego adds Machado ...I am curious to see who makes this SFG team, pulling for Mac and Suarez, I like Slater but he is not getting the AB's and not hitting, yet I see the Giants placing below LAD, Rockies and Pads in the standings regardless of who makes this team

  4. The real disadvantage to being an anon isn't that I/he/she doesn't have a "handle" for irregular-but-named bloggers to objectify, but we are all lumped together.
Sometimes I want to exclaim "That's not ME!" but then I say so-what?
I read named bloggers that I rarely agree with but want to see what they think whatever their names are. That they have a name makes really no difference because I don't skip any, even the named guys who never make any sense (which does NOT include campanari who usually does make a LOT of sense although maybe not this time).
From now on I will always end with a double period..

    1. I evaluate each post for whether it contributes to the discussion or not regardless of what the handle is. I prefer that people carry a handle but don't require it. With that, there will be no further discussion posted re. the relative merits of Anons.

  5. Giants clubbing today. Posey, Mac, and Crawford all contributing. The awesome 1-2 punch of Duggar and Panik is setting the pace. Only person not contributing is Maybin. Can't say I'll miss him much.

  6. I've got a handle and I think Gerber can play all 3 OF positions and is hitting better than Maybin - am I all alone on this one? Nice to see Posey Crawford and Williamson all hitting the ball hard...Duggar Panik at the top doing great today

  7. They and we :) needed that offesnive outburst today!..Hopefully it's the start of seeing Posey, Craw, Panik and Belt/LONGo too rounding into hitting shape...And MAC and Duggar seem to be coming along and doing a little something each day..Just hoping Mac's power returns...Tough position trying to win a job..but at least he's not laying an egg like Fergurson and Maybin..Para has earned a starting spot...and I have no problem until somebody forces the issue..But I guess the big question for the next 1o days is whether Farhan can work something out for another corner OF..which would change things just a litttle bit especially regarding a possible 5th OF.....Good stuff from most of the pitchers todaay..Poor Okert..given the chance..but just might be a AAAA pitcher while the other 4 lefties have shown otherwise..Gonna be a good bullpen..well, unless Melancon gets used!
