Giants Trade Cutch

The Giants finally threw in the towel on the season after failing to sweep the D'Backs and losing Steven Duggar for the rest of the season.  The Yankees needed an OF for the stretch run and postseason and had been rumored to be interested in Cutch.  That trigger got pulled tonight and Cutch is headed to the Big Apple and the Postseason.  With no realistic chance of making the postseason and McCutchen a pending free agent, the Giants really needed to get what they could for him and also ensure they could get under the CBT threshold.

The returns are still coming in.  One prospect the Giants receive is Abiatal Avelino, a 23 year old AA/AAA SS who reportedly can stick a the position and can hit a little is one.  The name of the other prospect is not yet known.  One potential problem with Avelino is he will be a minor league FA so the Giants may need to add him to the 40 man roster to keep him.

  1. Will the AL WC get an additional interest for Giant fans. Wanting McCutchen to succeed won't warm this Giants fan in favor of the the NYY. Go A's!

  2. I was at McCutchen's 6-hit walk-off home-run against the Dodgers game April 7th. It was the one baseball game I got to this season – but I had to leave after the 10th and then watched the walk-off in the SJ airport. Still, it was an amazing game, and solidified me as a Cutch-fan. Good luck to him. And I’m glad the Giants could get a little depth with the trade. There should be space on the 40-man roster.

  3. I was very, very happy with the trade. And while the Giants are going to have to bump someone off the 40-man roster to keep Avelino, I don't think that's going to be a huge problem. There are just quite a few 'fish or cut bait' guys who aren't fishing on it.

    1. IF McCutcheen did anything FOR the Giants this year, it includes making their draft position worse.

    2. Is that how you look at a season? Any good contributions only make the draft position worse..?

I'll just leave this quote from Kyle Shannahan here:
"We're going to try to get the worst possible draft position possible this year."

    3. McCutchen improved a position that was a black hole in 2017 and contributed to the Giants remaining competitive until the end of August which is exactly why the Giants acquired him. Prospect cost approximately equals prospect return so only cost is his pro-rated salary which, well, it's not my money and the Giants seem to have averted the CBT penalty.

As for draft position, unless they have the #1 overall in a year when there is a clear cut #1, draft there isn't a lot of difference in value between a top 5 or top 15 pick. Much as I like Joey Bart, I am not convinced he is a better prospect than they could have gotten at #10 or #15, so I am not in the "tank at all costs" camp.

  6. Juan De Paula is the second prospect. What I read -- Mid-90s fastball. Above average curve. Change up is behind the other two pitches. 1.71 ERA (47 innings) in A- this year. He's 20.

    1. Do you think they match up favorably with Crick and Reynolds?

  7. I too like the trade as we get something for Cutch. I enjoyed his tenure with the Good Guys, and wish him individual luck as the Evil Empire falls short in the playoffs.

RE "And while the Giants are going to have to bump someone off the 40-man roster to keep Avelino, I don't think that's going to be a huge problem..." wasn't McCutchen on the 40 man roster? And doesn't his departure provide an opening for Avelino? Asking more sage MLB fans than myself.

    1. I don't think they have to add Avelino until an offseason deadline. There are quite a few Giants prospects who will be Rule 5 draft eligible this offseason who may need to be added to protect them. There are also a lot of marginal players currently on the 40 man and some leaving free agents. It could be a very busy offseason for the 40 man roster!

  8. Cory Gearrin to the A's. Glad to see him have another shot at the post-season. (He's pitched better for the Rangers.)
