Game Wrap 8/14/2018: Giants 2 Dodgers 1

Stop me if you've heard this one before:  The Giants took a 1-0 lead into the 8'th inning only to lose it, except this time they retook the lead in the top of the 9'th inning and held off the Dodgers in the bottom of the frame for the Win.  Key Lines:

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 2, BB, HBP.  BA= .254.  Longo started both run-scoring rallies.  HBP in the 2'nd inning, eventually scoring on Alen Hanson's single.  Single to start off the 9'th.  Erased on a Fielder's Choice force out at 3B, but his replacement at 2B, Brandon Belt, scored on another hit by Hanson.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 1.  BA= .280.  Belt was back from the DL but started the game on the bench with the lefty Alex Wood pitching.  He came in when starting 1B Buster Posey had to move behind the plate when Nick Hundley got into a shoving match with Yasiel Puig.  Belt then singled in his first AB and eventually scored the winning run.

Alen Hanson SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .284.  Alen Hanson filled in at SS to give Brandon Crawford a day to recover from his collision with Gorkys Hernandez in game 1 of the series.   Hanson drove in both runs with a pair of singles out of the 8-hole.  Hanson is hitting .381 over his last 7 games, .317 over his last 15.  He recently topped MLBTR's list of position player minor league FA signings for this season to go with Dereck Rodriguez and Derek Holland who were #'s 1 and 3 on the pitching list.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 4.40.  Suarez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but then allowed just 2 hits and 1 BB over the next 5 IP to complete a scoreless start, his first QS since July 9.  Per sfgiants.com, Suarez attributed his regained success to a mechanical adjustment.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(10).  ERA= 2.01.  Smith was trying to close out his 3'rd consecutive game, so I was a little worried when Cody Bellinger reached on an IF single and promptly stole 2B.  Not to worry, as Smith struck out the next 2 batters to end it with aplomb.  Who does Bruce Bochy turn to if he needs another Save today?

The Giants Win kept them 5 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who beat the Rangers 6-4.  The Rockies also won, topping the Astros 5-1 to remain 1 game behind in 2'nd place.   The Dodgers dropped 2 games back in 3'rd place.

Derek Holland tries for the swwweeeeeep tonight facing Hyun-Jin Ryu in his first Start since May 2.

  1. Wotus: I liked the aggressive base-running on 2-out Hanson single. With Belt only escaping being out at home because of a high throw and then Slater cut down at the plate on the return of the over-throw that was some excitement and the right call in my book.

Puig: The guy has issues everywhere he goes... I wonder he'll ever figure out that the problem is in the mirror.

Suarez: Though the Giants were doomed after he barely escaped the first inning. Nice turn-around.

  2. Since we're going into the Hail Mary Home Stretch ... Thinking about it....

Hundley: Most Valuable Back-up. He's got 1.2 fWAR this season. That's 4th (tied with McCutchen). His catcher defensive numbers are as good as Posey's and while his average is lower, his power is better. He's really given the Giants a lot of production for a back-up catcher.

I'm still trying to work out 'Most Valuable Bench' and 'Most Valuable Rookie' in my head.

For MVB Hanson has the lead, but Slater also plays well in multiple positions. And I can't count out Chase d'Arnaud who got called up much later, but has been quite good coming off the bench which flashing good leather and an adequate bat (for a bench guy). Still, Hanson is in the lead though he seems to be transitioning to Super Utility Player. So I may have to make up a new category in my head...

For MVR I'm leaning super-heavy on D-Rod. But Duggar plays everyday, so he has more day-to-day impact whereas D-Rod is giving more 'win impact' on a per-start basis, but misses 4 out of every 5 games.

  3. A true Giant fan would never admit being sorry for anything Dodger, but, if ever there was a time, the last week might be it: 1-6, the last 4 being lost in the 9th, the 2 before lost in the 7th and 8th.
Their only win was a late meltdown by Colorado's Oh and Wade.
A starter hasn't had a decision since August 7th -- 7 straight games, Kershaw hasn't had a decision since August 2nd (Dodgers beat Milwaukee 21-5 -- bad karma?).
Maeda has 3 straight losses -- hasn't won since July 15th, a month ago.
That said, a "swwweeeeeep" would be purrrrfecttt!

  4. I just watched the replay of the Puig / Hundley interaction.
In my opinion Puig and the dodgers made a huge mistake last night.
The made sure the Giants are not sleeping.
Could this by something that brings this club house closer and tighter in the stretch drive?
    I am betting on it.
P.s. Puig is a puke in my humble opinion.

    1. Does anyone know what Hundley said that pulled Puig's pepper?
Had to be good although it doesn't take much for him.
How dumb do you have to be to take swings at a guy in full catcher's gear?
And a pro catcher -- they're tough. Maybe take on Tomlinson in his hornrims but a saavy catcher with a steel mask?
"Here, Puigie, take a free poke, right at my nose!"
      LOL
