Game Wrap 8/29/2018: D'Backs 3 Giants 1

The Giants may have been a bit stunned by the news that yet another another young player on the edge of establishing himself with the team had gone on the DL, but they played a lackluster game to drop the series finale against the NL West leading D'Back against whom they realistically needed a sweep to get back into contention for the division title.  Key Lines:

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.47.  DRod's string of QS's was broken as he reached 92 pitches by the end of the 5'th inning.  The bullpen pitched perfect ball the rest of the game and 3 runs allowed in 9 innings should be enough to win, but the Giants mustered just 3 hits, a walk and 3 HBP's on the night.

The Loss dropped the Giants 7 games off the pace set by the D'Backs in the NL West.

The Giants get a day off at home before starting a weekend 3-game home series against the Mets on Friday with Andrew Suarez facing Zack Wheeler.

it was disappointing but not unexpected to read that Steven Duggar was placed on the 10 day DL with a left shoulder dislocation with surgery not yet ruled out.  Even without surgery, he is likely done for the season.   Is it just me or have the Giants had a string of unusually back luck with injuries at critical points in young player's careers?  Matt Duffy, Austin Slater, Mac Williamson.  Heck, you can even go back to Buster Posey's ankle injury, and Joe Panik and Brandon Belt had to overcome multiple injuries.  Yeah, that trend can stop anytime.

  1. Duggar: It's gotten worse. Torn labrum. His season's over. He'll almost certainly get surgery.

  2. Labrum tear for Duggar. Probably done for the year as surgery is recommended. Bummer. At least we know what we have for the future.

  3. Jarret Parker breaking collarbone (was OF wall adequately padded? Very bad luck indeed - Duggar was one of the brightest spots in the season.

    1. Yep, add Jarrett Parker to the list.

    2. Andrew Susac. I remember when Susac was looking like the 'next thing.' Was in BA's Top-100 then a tooth infection, multiple injuries & concussions... Went from hot prospect and was big-time ammo in the 'Move Posey to First" movement to also-ran the year after his MLB debut thanks to all those injuries.

Tommy Joseph had a tremendous start in the farm system, was traded, then started suffering concussion and injury problems, was moved to first base by the Phillies but continued to get hurt, miss time and never got his swing back. The Rangers, who picked him up off waivers, signed him and eventually out-righted him to AA.

And Hector Sanchez. He was a decent back-up catcher until all those concussions just about derailed his career and have certainly hurt him over the long run.

  4. There are still McCutchen and Crawford standing...

  5. DrB, you're the doctor: how does someone's shoulder labrum tear? All Duggar did was slide in and get tagged (hard? didn't seem any worse than we usually see on plays).

Is it cumulative? Or, say, could he have started the tear on his great throw from CF that got the runner at home, and the stretch for the base completed the tear? It just seems weird to me.

Great list of young bad luck injuries. Ainsworth? Can't think of any other, great list...

    1. Duggar jammed his hand into the base pretty hard which apparently created a referred force on the shoulder. He said he felt the shoulder pop out then settle back in place. The labrum is a fibrous band around the ball and socket joint that holds the ball in the socket. The force disrupting the joint was great enough to overcome the strength of the labrum and tear it. So I believe it was an acute injury that occurred a the time of the slide.

Also, it was his left shoulder that was injured and he throws RH so it was definitely not related to throwing.

Lastly, I think Steven Duggar and the Giants caught a huge break that it was his non-throwing shoulder that was injured because he has a great arm that should not be impacted by this injury.

  6. Who should take Duggar's spont in OF?

    Who will take the spot?

I guess Gorkys now starts and the new back-up is? Bourjos? Blanco?

    1. Blanco was called up and Gorkys played CF last night, so there you have it.

    2. After Duggar, Hernandez grades out as the best defensive OFer. Then comes Slater, Pence & McCutchen. Blanco still has range so he might do some relief out there.
