Down on the Farm: 8/29/2018

AAA  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Albuquerque Isotopes 2-1:

Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, HR(24).  BA= .260.
Tyler Herb RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.65.
Tyer Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 2.18.

Tyler Herb's last Start was a disaster against the Fresno Grizzlies, so this was a nice bouncback.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels subdued the Reading Fightin' Phils 3-2:

CJ Hinojosa 3B- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .255.
Conner Menez LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.38.
Dan Slania RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.51.

Conner Menez seems to have the strikeout stuff but needs to cut down on the BB's to take full advantage.  Jacob Heyward is hitting .412 over his last 10 games.

A+  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 9-3:

Jacob Heyward DH- 3 for 4, 2 HR(11).  BA= .257.
Wander Franco 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .278.
Carlos Sano RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.09.
John Russell RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Carlos Sano has 83 K's in 81.1 IP, but also has 36 BB's.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets stung the Lexington Legends 5-1:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .249.
Jacob Gonzalez DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .226.
Norwith Gudino RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.55.
Keenan Bartlett RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.14.

2 QS in a row for Norwith Gudino with 15 K's and 1 BB in 13.2 IP.  Heliot Ramos is flirting with the .250 threshold like the Giants are flirting with .500.

Short Season  Eugene Emeralds topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-5:

Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .307.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 3, HR(11), BB.  BA= .305.
Dalton Combs RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .310.
Gregory Santos RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.43.

Nice to see Gregory Santos back on the mound after a very scary encounter with a batted ball.

  1. Are you concerned at all that Santos returned so fast? Especially with the Giants poor history of players returning back and then suffering a recurrence? Or is the science behind concussions so early still that they are all reaching out into the dark and trying to find what works?

    1. As long as he passed the concussion protocol, I don't see any problem with him coming back. To me, the key is avoiding future injury, which isn't related to timing of his comeback.

Again, I strongly recommend that baseball start requiring significant head protection for pitchers before someone gets killed. It needs to be much more dramatic than the lined caps we see now. I would start with something like a Lacrosse helmet and face cage, only with more padding.

    2. How are you going to have the fluidity to pitch in your motion wearing a full Lacrosse helmet..? Those things are heavy, bulky.

It's the right idea, there just needs to be 2 or 3 guys who can show they can pitch five with that kind of thing dangling off of your dome...

    3. I would say that is a mischaracterization of lacrosse helmets. If you don't like lacrosse helmets, then make pitchers where double flap batting helmets. And yes, sometimes you have to make adjustments for the sake of safety.

    4. Just mark my word, it is not a matter of if, but when a pitcher dies from being hit in the face or head with a batted ball.

  2. Re: Menez, the first couple of innings were a case study in a promising pitcher showing all his strengths and weaknesses. He started off the game by walking the first three batters. A great off speed pitch started a 1-2-3 double play and that basically got him out of the inning. He got his strikeout mojo going but he also hit at least 2 batters. I was a bit surprised to note that he wasn't throwing 95mph gas; more like 91-92. may have touched 93 but he was missing bats. I'm no expert but his stuff seems second only to Logan Webb's on the AA team.

The rest of the Richmond squad (read position players) seems pretty weak.

  3. The Giants ought to find out if Tyler Rogers can get major league hitters out.
That would be more instructive than confirming that Pierce Johnson can't.
