Game Wrap 5/2/2018: Giants 9 Padres 4

The Giants offense jumped on a familiar nemesis, Clayton Richard, and kept adding on to give Derek Holland his first Win of the season, with a lot of help from the bullpen.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 1, HBP.  BA= .221.  The HBP caught Cutch on the elbow.  Reports say no fracture.  He'll be DTD with a elbow contusion.

Nick Hundley C- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(3).  BA= .326.  Wow!  Hundley seems to be morphing into a great hitter in front of our eyes!  He's hitting .500 over his last 7 games and .366 over his last 15.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .304.  Belt's OPS is over 1.000.

Austin Jackson CF- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .234.  AJax is hitting .300 over his last 7 games and has been putting up some tough AB's in the process.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .204.  Nice day at the plate for Crawford who has been scuffling at the plate.  3 ribeyes should give him a very good feeling.

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.70.  Not quite a QS, but I am pretty sure the Giants would be happy with 3 runs allowed in 5 IP every game from Holland.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Will Smith makes the first appearance of the rest of his career after more than 1 year layoff for Tommy John Surgery and he was terrific.  2 K's, topped out at 94 MPH on the heater.  He and Tony Watson now make a lefty reliever team that should rival the Affeldt/Lopez duo from the Glory Days.

Cory Gearrin RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.22.  Gearrin seems to be coming around after a series of rough appearances.  He's a key bullpen piece going forward.

*********************************************************************************

The Win put the Giants back to 1 game over .500.  Final impact on NL West standings TBD pending with the Dodgers leading the Dangerous D'Backs 1-0 in the 7'th inning at the time of this writing.

The Giants now head out on a 10 game roadie to play the Braves(3 games), Phillies(4 games) and Pirates(3 games).  Those are all cities they do not want to be visit later in the summer, so they need to make the most of that scheduling break.  Chris Stratton opens the Braves' series vs Mike Foltynewicz.

  1. Gearrin may be the worst bullpen piece*. What a difference a year makes.

*Not counting Snelten who is obviously holding a spot for Mac.

  2. Dodgers beat the Dbacks. Was odd to actually be pulling for them to win last night.

  3. The best part of that game (besides the win) was Will Smith's big ol' grin after he retired the side and Hunley flipping him the ball for a keepsake.

The only blemish to yesterday was the Dodgers won last night. But... It's tough to be upset about that because the Diamondback were running away and the Dodger have so many recent injury problems I'm not terribly sure they're going to be able to hit .500 anytime soon.
