Down on the Farm: 5/21/2018

AAA  Las Vegas 51's crushed the Sacramento River Cats 9-1:

Tyler Beede RHP- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 5 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.94.

Another really bad start for Tyler Beede.  Not sure what the answers are here.  I still believe the potential is there, but he's kind of turning into the pitching version of Gary Brown.  Austin Slater not in the lineup after being pulled mid-game on Sunday.  Rumors have him joining the Giants in Houston where they will need a DH(although isn't Pablo Sandoval the obvious DH?).

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

A+  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Charleston RiverDogs 2-0:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .220.
Orlando Garcia DH- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .254.
Jose Marte RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 2.27.
Tyler Schimpf RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Frank Rubio RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(9).  ERA= 1.31.

I'm cautiously bullish on Jose Marte's future, although he seems to be infected with the same walking disease as several other Giants pitching prospects.

  1. If there's any consolation for Beede's fall from favor -- is he even a Top 30 anymore? -- look at Chris Stratton, which may or may not be good although the latter does lead the Giants in wins thus far this year. If he even does that well, hmm, well, that's not really very good. Gary Brown is probably a better comp.
It was easy to overlook the John Polonius sighting (2-3 for the 'Cats). Where oh where did THAT come from? A career sub-AA player (<.250 in ~250 games), he's actually 4-8 in AAA. Move over Williamson, Slater, Hanson, and Perez, Sacramento has a new batting leader at .667!

    1. Chris Stratton has a way big sample size of being mediocre (more like bad) in the minors then his small sample of being good in the majors (which is shrinking by the start).

    2. Yes. He’d have to lose an arm to fall from the top 30.

  2. Would you root for a pitcher named Jason Junk?
Not today, he's pitching against the Green Jackets who are leading both divisions of the SAL with pitching and not a lot of hitting -- just wait until Ramos and Gonzales put it together and add to Geraldo, Baldwin, and, well, Malique Zeigler!
The Giants minors are doing pretty good, Sacramento was over .500 before 2 losses, the rest are in the hunt in their leagues.
River Cats have a lot of good OFers but pitching suffers from their proximity to SF! How will they fare when 3 or 4 of their best hitters (Williamson, Slater, Pence) get called up? Would like to see Duggar wake up!

  3. might be time to convert beede into a reliever at this point, maybe he can be the next kyle crick!! giants may need a swingman out of the pen after tonight's game
