Game Wrap 5/18/2018: Rockies 6 Giants 1

This game reached it's high water mark for the Giants when Gorkys Hernandez led off the bottom of the first inning with a long HR to left of CF.  After that, the Giants offense went into hibernation and Ian Desmond's 3-run  dinger in the 4'th inning all but ended it.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez LF/CF- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .273.  Gorkys has muscled up for 2 HR's within his last 7 games, but he's hitting just .188 in that span.  Some fun facts about Gorkys:  He did not have any HR's in 310 AB's last season when he was reportedly battling a persistent wrist injury.  He's hit 3 in 77 AB's so far this season.  Last season he had 20 doubles in the 310 AB's.  Amazingly, he has yet to hit a double this season.

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.94.  Holland actually pitched quite well except for one horrible pitch to Ian Desmond, who Jeff Sullivan said was hopelessly washed up in his Fangraphs chat yesterday.  Desmond came into the game hitting .167, but maybe he read that chat and got fired up?  Despite the anemic BA, this was Desmond's 7'th HR of the season and it was a back-breaker for Holland and the Giants who never recovered.  It was essentially the difference in the game as the Rockies score their final 2 runs in the 9'th against Jose Valdez who would not have been in there if the game was close.

The NL West leading D'Backs lost to the Mets 3-1, so the Giants remain 4 games behind them in 3'rd place.  The 2'nd place Rockies gain a game and are not just 0.5 games out of the lead.  The 4'th place Dodgers were rained out in Washington so gain 0.5 games for a 7.5 game deficit.  The Padres topped the Pirates 3-2 and are 8 games off the pace in last place just 0.5 games behind the Dodgers.

Chris Stratton tries to play the Stopper today facing another good young RHP in Jon Gray.

  1. After Gorkys' homerun and absolutely great catch, I began to feel badly about ragging on him. Then he struck out twice lifting his K rate to 36% (28/77).
Something's got to give: Pence, Slater, and Williamson all should be on the 25-man roster but there isn't even one little place open -- at least that's the way the Giants seem to see it.
Gomez needs to learn to hit higher level pitching in Sacramento not San Francisco. His one hit was a groundball off Matt Harvey (who gave up 7 hits to 19 batters)and he has 4 Ks to go with it in 7 ABs. He's not ready.
Who on the 40-man roster can back up Tomlinson, the IF backup, until Panik or Hanson is back? Ryder Jones, Austin Slater, or -- Pablo? Wonder if any of them can cover 1st or turn a DP...
Sad commentary on your San Francisco Giants!

  2. Per www.thespread.com:
Despite being at home and 6-2 in Stratton's last eight starts overall and have won eight of his last nine home outings, the Giants are not the odds favorites to win today.
Despite the Rockies are 3-9 in Gray's last 12 starts coming off five days of rest and are 4-9 in his last 13 road starts versus a team that owns a losing record, they are the odds favorites.
Maybe bettors took a look at today's lineups and bet their Coors on the visitors.

  3. If the Giants can hold their head(s) above water (.500?) until reinforcements arrive, they can stay within the pack, but May only becomes tougher with the Astros (8-2 last 10) and the Cubs (7-3 last 10) plus 5 more with CO who seems to match up too well with SF.
The month ends with an 8-game road trip before coming home in June to face Philadelphia & Arizona, and then heading off to Washington heat.
All of their next 7 opponents are in 1st place in their divisions, or close to being 1st!
What ill-fated luck: the Giants who have difficulty finding 8 hitters will have to find 9 in Houston!
A poor showing in the next 19 games could end the season before Bumgarner reaches the mound, Samardzija refines his stuff, Melancon finds his arm, Panik catches a hard throw, Williamson clears his head, Hanson sprints around the bases, Pence tests his new stance, and Cueto starts his rehab.
How 'bout a 3-week hot streak! Win at least 10 of 19 and finish game 62 close to .500!

  4. Hers's something for Giants/Romo fans:
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Tampa Bay Rays plan to give veteran reliever Sergio Romo his first career start Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels, though it will be a short one.
Romo, who has appeared in 588 major league games over the course of 11 seasons, will open the game before Rays manager Kevin Cash turns to rookie left-hander Ryan Yarbrough.
The plan is to let Romo face the heart of an Angels' lineup heavy on right-handed batters with power before bringing in Yarbrough, who has a 3-2 record and 3.93 ERA. It is intended to keep the likes of Mike Trout and Albert Pujols from getting a third look at Yarbrough later on in the game.
''They could obviously change that now because they know we're pitching Romo, but I doubt it. There's a couple guys in that lineup that aren't going to move no matter who's pitching,'' Cash said prior to Friday's game. ''Get through an inning or two, see where we're at, then probably hand the ball over to Yarbs. I think it helps him, benefits him.''
The Rays have relied on their relievers to effectively carry them through several games this season because of injuries, but this would take the concept of a ''bullpen game'' to the next level. However, Cash doesn't think it is as wild as it might seem at first glance.
''We've kicked this idea around for quite some time,'' Cash said. ''The National League, it becomes a lot easier because you're valuing that hitter spot, which we do, and it avoids your traditional starter having to come up to the plate more than three times.''
Still, Cash admitted the interest around baseball to the announcement that Romo would start caught him by surprise.
