Down on the Farm: 5/3/2018

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Las Vegas 51's 5-3:

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .280.
Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .368.
Chase d'Arnaud 2B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .279.
Casey Kelly RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 9.25.
Derek Law RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.11.

Steven Duggar's BA has fallen back since it peaked at .300 on 4/29.  Austin Slater got sent back down?  Man, the Sac-SF shuttle is running overtime!  I can't keep up!  Not sure how playing 1B increases his positional value much.  Casey Kelly produces a QS after some very rough ones.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

A+  Visalia Rawhide blanked the San Jose Giants 4-0:

Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .305.
Sandro Fabian RF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .239.
Conner Menez LHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 1.42.

Low A  West Virginia Power outlasted the Augusta Greenjackets 8-7 in 15 innings:

Manuel Geraldo SS- 1 for 7, 2 SB(7).  BA= .264.
Jean Angomas LF- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .257.
Ryan Calabrese C- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB, SF.  BA= .205.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Joey Marciano LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.54.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
John Russell RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.79.

They used the stupid runner-on-2B-to-start-extra-innings rule in this one.  It didn't seem to help shorten the game much.  There were a total of 7 runs scored in extra innings, but the teams kept matching runs until the Power achieved an asymmetry in the bottom of the 15'th.  I believe that accounts for all the Unearned Runs in the pitching lines.  If ERA wasn't already an obsolete measure of pitching success, this rule drives the nail in the coffin.

  1. Isn't a "tie" a better outcome than an artificial contrived ending?
How 'out just flipping a coin after 12 innings of regular play?

    1. Why don't they have a Home run hitting derby?

  2. With Panik hurt, you'd think if Slater was passable at 2nd, he'd be getting reps.
I don't remember any reviews calling his infield defense bad.

    1. Slater's played 96 games at 2nd base, none above AA. Maybe he can't turn the DP?
Sacramento has played d'Arnaud, Schroder, Gomez, Rutledge, and Calixte at second this year (and Hanson, of course)
I suspect it will be Hanson and Tomlinson for the Giants until someone plays themselves out of it.
Hanson and Crawford turned 3 nifty double plays the other day.

  3. How about this:
Toronto, on their way from a game Wednesday in Minnesota to a game today (Friday) in Tampa, played a double header in Cleveland!
First game went 11 innings in 4:47, second 3:11. Back-to-back games, 19,007 fans. Big Joe Biagini got bombed in the second game when he was called up expressly to pitch this game!
In addition to the doubleheader, Toronto plays 21 games in 20 consecutive days!
Cleveland fares a little better with 18 games in 17 days plus they got to stay home for the DH but travel to NY today.
The teams have brought this on themselves in pursuit of beacoup $$ -- they could cut the schedule back to 154 games but that would be fewer butts in the seats, i.e., less $$.
The schedule was expanded in 1962 to maintain balance when the leagues went from 8 to 10 teams. There is no longer any semblance of balance because of the $$ benefit of interleague play.
No wonder there are so many injuries.

  4. FWIW: The Mets will DFA Matt Harvey tomorrow amid poor performance and some issues.
Shark, Stratton, Suarez, Blach, and Holland are all better bets "right now" but the next guy -- Rodriguez or Beede or Kelly or ? -- might not be.
He was soooo good just a few years ago...

    1. I seems like Matt Harvey might have some personal issues he needs to work out before he tries to play baseball again.

    2. Harvey wouldn’t take a MiLB assignment with Mets. Doubt he’d sign a MiLB deal elsewhere.
