Down on the Farm: 5/10/2018

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 7-2:

Tyler Beede RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H 3 R, 6 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.63.
Nolan Riggs RHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

That's a tough line to look at for Tyler Beede.  Some shuffling in the system for pitchers.  Nolan Riggs gets the callup from San Jose.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels quieted the Trenton Thunder 3-1:

Luigi Rodriguez RF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .429.
Dillon Dobson 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .160.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.31.

Just a 5 inning start, but Shaun Anderson is a horse!

A+  San Jose Giants pounded the Modesto Nuts 13-7:

Bryce Johnson CF- 1 for 3, 3 BB.  BA= .288.
Wander Franco 3B- 3 for 6, 2 2B.  BA= .308.
Gio Brusa 1B- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(5), BB.  BA= .276.
Sandro Fabian RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .229.
Johneshwy Fargas LF- 2 for 4, HBP, SB(11).  BA= .400.
Dylan Rheault RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 1.96.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets crushed the Rome Braves 15-1:

Logan Baldwin RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .250.
Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .212.
Shane Matheny 3B- 3 for 5.  BA= .327.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 3, HR(3), BB, SB(4).  BA= .252.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, 3B, 2 SB(11).  BA= .296.
Jason Bahr RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 1.77.
Carlos Sano RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

Heliot Ramos seems to be coming out of a brutal slump with 4 hits in 15 AB's over his last 4 games.  Jacob Gonzalez staying steady.  Excited that Geraldo seems to be finally over the Augusta hump.  Dominant Start for Jason Bahr.  SAL might be too easy for him?  I got nothing on Carlos Sano.  25 yo RHP with no prior affiliated experience on his milb bio page.  Great size at 6'4", 205 lbs.

  1. i could see shaun anderson earning a promotion to sacramento real soon and could leapfrog beede if he succeeds in triple-a

  2. Kyle Crick's stuff was electric but he was all over the place but he finally figured it out enough to make it to the league. Truth be told, not sure Beede is going to figure it out. I've seen both at the AA level and Crick, while wild, had the kind of stuff that made you stop and watch.

    1. I don't think Beede's stuff is that great, or even nearly as good as Crick's fastball.

  3. Its good to see Baldwin hitting again. That was a pretty ugly start of the season for him, which surprised me. There is some real promise with the talent at Augusta. Anyone know why Stetson Woods isn't pitching in Augusta? I mean the staff they have there already has been very, very impressive so far, but I was a little surprised he isn't pitching there yet. Is it a length of the season thing or have players past him by over last spring training? Or worse a injury I haven't heard of? Thanks for the articles Doc! Thru thick and thin, and the Giants face planting, I can always count on a good read from you.

  4. Luigi Rodriguez spent 8 years in the Cleveland system and, presumably, exercised Rule 55 following last year's WS.
He had a reasonable 2017 AA year after advancing to AA the previous year and being somewhat overmatched.
Indians may have lost confidence he would make it, perhaps his 80-game drug suspension in 2015 had something to do with that.
Wonder what he and the Giants saw in each other, but he has been improving at each level and is certainly lights out at Richmond at 25. His 20Ks in (86 PAs) isn't too good but close to his career %.
Interesting to watch him, his 2018 .429 BA is for only 70 ABs, in his last 10 he is 18-34 .529 with 2 HRs.
Before that he was only 12-36.
Like Sacramento, Richmond has a OF logjam of guys who need ABs while the Giants scuffle with Cutch and 3 backups.

  5. Jim Callis latest mock has the Giants deciding between Georgia tech catcher Joey Bart and Florida pitcher Brady Singer for 1st round pick. Both have interesting profiles. The Georgia tech has produced 2 pretty good MLB catchers Matt Wieters and Jason Varitek. I wonder how Buster Posey would feel if Bart is the pick. Singer was drafted previos in 2015 2nd round by the Blue Jays. It wouldn't surprise me if Singer is the pick, since the Giants drafted pitchers Phil Bickford and Tyler Beede both previously drafted by the Blue Jays.

Yes, teams don't draft based on need. But with Madbum's extension questions, Cueto s injury concerns and contract and Samardjas contract, if they rate both players equally, maybe Singer should be the pick? I've read that he has a good arm that can move up quickly like Mike Leake did. Can the Giants afford to keep throwing big money at veteran pitchers to fill their needs? Gotta start developing their own pitching on a consistent bases. Then again if they see Bart as a MLB starting catcher in the future, then they should strongly consider taking him. We'll see what happens.

  6. I thought we already had a next generation catcher with Garcia. I'd go pitcher, personally.

  7. Black promoted to Sac.
Giants depth in C is thin. Garcia and ....
Matt Winn? Sanchez? Brown? Long shots: Calabrese and 18 yo Genoves?
And why did the Giants Sign Ryan Hanigan?

    1. Hanigan is MLB depth for 2018 season. Genoves is still at least 3-4 years away, he's not even in a full season league yet, right?

So I can see the Giants getting Bart, and Posey should be okay with it, Bart is probably ready in 2-4 years, when Posey is mid-30's, they could share the catcher's position, with Posey starting and Bart backup, and over time, Posey could be a super-utility player starting regularly but giving rest across the starting lineup except for CF and SS, perhaps, while mostly backup catching as Bart rises to full-time starter, say when Posey's contract is over or near ending.
