  1. When playing for "pride" and a better draft position, September should be rest the old and test the new.
Anybody already on the 40-man roster who might help in 2018, like Moronta, Williamson, Moncrief and Calixte should be up and playing although the last two seem to be really long shots.
Then there are Heathcott, Shaw, and Duggar who could be on the 40-man roster and playing this month rather than space takers like Morse (no help no more), Trevor Brown (AAA bust), AND Sandoval (failed experiment in aging obsolescence).

    1. Shaw and Duggar do not need to be added to the 40-man yet, and the Giants have a lot of decent layers who will need to be added this year. No point in adding them now and eating a 40-spot just see them now. They will both go to ST and given legit shots at winning jobs right away, but without adding to the roster crunch.

There are likely 5 guys who will need to be added to the 40 this off season...

      Beede
      Martinez
      Snelton
      Garcia
      Coonrod

And Gregorio will need to be added back to the 40 after his suspension is over.

These players, currently taking up a 40-spot, will almost certainly be gone...

      Cain
      Morse
Hundley (I am sure they will try to resign him, but I doubt that will happen)
      Brown
Gearin (he is OK when he comes in clean, but he is atrocious out of the stretch)

That means that two of these will need to be cut loose...

      Parker
      Moncrief
      Hernandez
      Calixte
      Federowicz
      Osich
      Okert

This crunch says that legit prospects like Duggar, Suarez, and Shaw will NOT see MLB time this month. We MAY see Snelton since he needs to be added anyway. We may see Rogers (unlikely) or Heathcott because there is no risk in looking at them.

    2. AND, Slater will be up within the week.
It would be good to look at Shaw, and he's earned it. He could take Morse's spot, no, and he's not coming back. I hope.
Gearrin? He'll be back and he won't lose his 40-man slot. That's for sure.
BTW, Spring Training is not the time to find out if young guys can hit ML pitching! They see more guys who won't make it and guys that will just working on "stuff"!

    3. I agree, that September time is better than March time for evaluation. But that does not eliminate the roster crunch. For every Duggar, Shaw or Suarez that you add in September, you have to make a premature decision on a Calixte, Moncrief, Parker or whomever else you need to add to the crunch.

And I forgot to add Herb as another guy who needs to be added this off season.

Again, I agree that these guys are good and I would really like to see them get some real ABs this season. The logistics just don't support that action.
