Down on the Farm: 2017 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Season Review

Short Season A ball is where the better college draftees generally get assigned for the professional debuts.  This year's Salem-Keizer squad featured several 2017 draftees including OF's Bryce Johnson and Logan Baldwin, IF's Orlando Garcia and Shane Matheny, C Rob Calabrese and DH Michael Sexton.  There was an AZL graduate from 2016, Malique Ziegler manning CF and a couple of backsliders from Augusta in 1B Ryan Kirby and SS Manuel Geraldo.

The pitching staff was headed by Stetson Woods starting his 3'rd full season after doing absolutely nothing in his last 2 with the AZL Giants.  There were a trio of DSL Graduates in Julio Benitez, Jose Marte and Alejandro De La Rosa.  Draftees Peter Lanoo, Jason Bahr, John Russell and Garrett Cave were later additions.

Like most other Giants minor league affiliates, the Volcanoes finished with the worst record in their league with a 29-47 record.  Woods and Ziegler started out strong but faded badly in the second half.  Johnson and Baldwin hit for average and Garcia showed some interesting power potential.  International pitchers were inconsistent and the draftees were disappointing.  Here are the team leaders by category:

  1. I sure like what Logan Baldwin accomplished there.

    1. He was impressive and might be my highest ranked prospect from the team. I thought Ziegler would be but that second half collapse is worrisome.

    2. I don't know. Jason Bahr put up some good stats after moving into the starters rotation. That and his raw pitching ability has me excited to see how he does in "A Ball" next year. I could definitely see a similar upcoming season for him as Garrett Williams had this past season.

    3. Here's a clip showing Bahr's fastball delivery. Against FSU in the regionals:
