Wow! The Giants played another wretched game with the guy who is supposed to be their ace on the mound. Doesn't get much worse than this. Key Lines:
Buster Posey C- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .320. Credit to Buster for plugging away at what he can do and not try to carry the team by himself. On the other hand, the days of Buster carrying a team all by himself are probably not coming back.
Brandon Crawford SS- 0 for 4. BA= .247. It's just one game and Crawford has had a really good second half. Him hitting cleanup, though, tells you all you need to know about this team.
Pablo Sandoval 3B- 0 for 3. BA= .195. So, Pablo broke out of his 0 for 40 slump with a 3-run dinger in the first game of the series, then followed that up with a SF. He's 0 for 7 since then.
Kelby Tomlinson 3B- 1 for 1. BA= .268. Honestly, if the Giants need a placeholder for Christian Arroyo to start next season and the choices are Pablo Sandoval and Kelby? Give me Kelby!
Jarrett Parker DH- 1 for 4, HR(3). BA= .244. Nice to have Parker back from an oblique strain. His final slash line from August was .268/.304/.443. Some fans may look at the OBP and scoff, but hey, I'll take that with plus D in LF for a full season.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.55. Yeah, this worries me just a little. If the Giants are going to contend next year, they can't have too many of these games from The Big Guy.
Albert Suarez RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.86. Sorry, I just don't see Albert Suarez being part of the next good Giants team, whenever that is.

The Giants now trail the Phillies by 1 game for the top draft pick in 2018. They lead the ChiSox by 1.5 games and the Tigers by 5.5 games.

Giants come home for their penultimate homestand of the season with Chris Stratton facing Kenta Maeda tomorrow night in the first game of what looked like a showdown series against the Dodgers at the start of the season. Maybe the Giants can extend the Dodgers current losing streak and put some more doubt in their minds about the postseason, or maybe they can keep shooting for the #1 overall draft pick.

There is an interesting article in fanrag mlb, regarding a NL scout who is bullish on Samardja and Moore for 2018, and believes the Giants have a chance to contend in 2018, which somewhat encouraging. I'm a little nervous about Bobby Evans making the right moves to better this team though..

I'd give Evans some rope myself. So far, at least to me, his moves have been based on solid reasoning. The process, if you will, has been sound, but the results have not worked out. Once upon a time, Brian Sabean had 3 future frontline starters lined up for the immediate post-Bonds era. That would be AFW, Ainsworth, Foppert and Williams. Again, the process was sound, but all 3 crashed and burned. Sabes believed in the process and kept plugging away and eventually built a championship rotation with a core of Matt Cain, Tim LIncecum and Madison Bumgarner.
DeleteAgreed, Evans should be given some rope. Even the most experienced GMs have trades that don't work out, or plans that fail to materialize like those 3 young pitchers mentioned. My concern comes from Evans not willing to overpay to get the closer they needed to get in 2016 to compete in the playoffs. He even admitted regretting not getting the deal done, which surprised me.

I would argue that Evans original instinct to not overpay for a closer was the right process. Look at what happened when he did overpay for Mark Melancon(I admit I was one who said he had to overpay for one last offseason).
Deletei think next season will be a prove it season, if they have another year like this next season, ownership could decide to clean house from baer on down.
DeleteCan I please be unbanned from posting? I'm sorry I got upset yesterday, maybe it was a little uncalled for calling Mac an airhead, even though I meant nothing malicious by it I was simply trying to give my opinion on his intangibles but I could have phrased it better.

Jarrett Parker is leading the Giants OFers in slugging percentage which would be something if he weren't just .001 ahead of Denard Span.
ReplyDeleteHe also is striking out at a 30% rate.
His arm is great, he has speed, and if he runs into another wall he'll miss another third of a season.
If Parker is the Giants' power OFer of the future, they might not be a .500 team. IMHO.
I don't think Jarrett Parker is the Giants power OF of the future. He's more of a 4'th OF to me, but he might be the best they have right now.
DeleteMaybe pinch hit? Just not with 2 outs!
DeleteRegarding lineup for Dodger game Monday:
ReplyDeleteFinally, Bochy has resorted to pulling numbers out of a hat!
