The Dominican Summer League(DSL) is another place where age vs level is a critical metric for evaluating the health of the farm system. Since international prospects can sign at age 16, you are looking for 17 year olds who succeed at this level and can then move on to the States for their age 18 season(although since government enforced truth-in-advertising came on the scene, the 17 yo thing suddenly became less critical as in the past, you never really knew if a prospect was really 16 when they signed. Probably still don't, but it's less likely to be way off). 2017 would be the first pro experience for prospects signed in 2016. The Giants were in the first year of their penalty of being limited to $300 K bonuses in 2016. I found 2 names who got the maximum from this signing class: SS Ghordy Santos and OF Ismael Alcantara. Alcantara appeared in just 3 games in June then disappeared, which means he was probably injured. Santos got off to a slow start but came on in the second half of the season.
Other 17 yo's to make on the DSL Giants roster include OF Raiber Gutierrez, 2B/3B/OF Aynesber Sivira, OF Alexander Canario, 3B Samuel Jorge, SS Andrew Caraballo, IF Enoch Watts, OF Luigi Pichardo, C Keyberth Mejia, RHP Yovanny Moronta. Another RHP, Rafael Martinez was listed as a signing but failed to appear in any games. Moronta was wild as a hair, walking something like 13 batters in just 2+ IP.
Key holdovers included OF Franklin Labour, OF Jose Patino, RHP Norwith Gudino and LHP Marco Gonzalez. Loose armed Gregory Santos was added after the Eduardo Nunez trade.
