Game Wrap 9/6/2017: Giants 11 Rockies 3

Joe Panik had 5 hits and set a franchise record for hits in a 3 game series to lead the Giants to a route in Coors Field.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 6.  BA= .258.  Gorkys is hitting .273 with a .348 OBP since the All-Star break.

Joe Panik 2B- 5 for 6, 2 2B.  BA= .285.  Joe came into the series hitting .267 and came out almost 20 points higher.  In the process, he set a franchise record for hits in a 3 game series with 12 putting him ahead of Fred Lindstrom, Bill Terry and the immortal Mike Benjamin.  This is what makes baseball worth watching even in the most miserable of seasons.

Nick Hundley C-2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .258.  Hundley has been everything you would want from a backup catcher on a contending team.

Kelby Tomlinson 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .263.  Game:  Name one thing Pablo does better than Kelby.

Mac Williamson PH- 1 for 1, HR(2).  BA= .238.  I want to see more of Mac, please!

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.43.  Cueto was terrific using a diving changeup as his kill pitch the first time through the batting order and the elevated FB the second time through per Shawn Estes analysis.  BTW, Shawn Estes is, by far, the most interesting analyst on Giants Postgame Live right now.

Giants head to Chicago to play the ChiSox but get a day off in the Windy City tomorrow.  Stay safe, everybody!  Friday's game features a matchup worth tuning into:  Matt Moore vs Lucas Giolito.

  1. "This is what makes baseball worth watching even in the most miserable of seasons." Couldn't concur more Doc. JP has been an absolute pleasure to watch. And he credits his hit streak to something as simple as choking up.

It was fun watching Mac put one in the seats. The general concensus among the fans, at least from what I read, is that they really want him to suceed, and they just don't understand why he seems to get screwed over so often. I'm obviously not privy to anything about anything, but the perception is that he just doesn't get a fair shake. I don't know, but hopefully he continues to get some honest looks the rest of the season.

As for Pablo, I read this earlier via Twitter:
"They should start naming every hurricane Pablo. That way it wouldn't hit anything."

His defense may be a bit better than Kelby's at third right now. He should have fielded that ball that was initially ruled a double but later changed to an error. But no harm was done. I'm not sure you can expect perfect defense from a guy who's trying to be good at four positions. I would still take Kelby there for the rest of the year before Pablo, but I'm afraid Bochy will just keep running him out there.

  2. My view on Mac, is he has always been hurt, and his body of work is more solid than "this guy owns minor league pitchers".
He looks like a power hitter, and has had stretches, but he's now a 27 year old left fielder with a 771 ops in AAA.

For whatever reason he just seems like he should be a good prospect, but I can't say he deserves a chance more than Parker, Slater, or Jones.

    1. That sums it up. Mac hasn't crushed minor league pitching. As enwrit notes, especially at his age, especially in the PCL.

Players don't wait for a fair shot. They kick the door down.

There is LOT of opportunity in 2018. 3rd and left wide open. (And really, the whole outfield.) If Mac (or anyone else) makes his case, he'll play.

    2. I guess I'm remembering Mac's 2012 slash line of .342/.392/.596 in Salem-Keizer, and his 2013 slash line of .292/.375/.504 in San Jose, and his .318/.420/.506 in 2014 and his .293/.366/.429 in Richmond in 2015. Then I look at his size and athleticism and shots like nonchalantly taking a high, outside 97 MPH FB over the right-CF fence last night and I just see the guy who I think has the best chance of being the masher the Giants need in LF. But that's just me.
