Spring Training Game Wrap 3/23/2015: Giants 8 Royals 3

The Giants offense got untracked to today and the pitching was not bad either.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .190.  Panik needs a string of multi-hit games.

Daniel Carbonell(PH-LF)- 2 for 2, HR(2).  BA= .286.  Carbonell doubled his hits as well as HR's for the spring and raised his BA by almost .100.  Counting his spring training stats, he has now hit 7 HR's in 214 American professional PA's.  That's about 20 per 600 PA's, pretty good for a guy whose swing is "stiff, weak wristed and without good bat speed or any semblance of weight transfer."

Brandon Crawford(SS)- 2 for 3, SB(1).  BA= .211.  Crawford's bat seems to be heating up.

Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .159.  When he connects, he connects.

Juan Perez(RF)- 1 for 2, BB, Assist(2B)- .286.  Lil' Juan P is trying so hard to make the team!

Andrew Susac(Catcher)- 2 for 2, 3B.  BA= .231.   Susac may be playing his way back into the reserve catcher picture with a hot bat.

Jake Peavy(RHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.  One inning short of a QS.  Progress!

Jean Machi, Hunter Strickland and Jose Casilla pitched 1 scoreless inning each.

Angel Pagan is scheduled to play in a minor league game tomorrow.

Ryan Vogelsong will start the MLB game while Matt Cain stretches it out in a minor league contest.

  1. Panik-His solid approach keeps him out of long slumps.
Carbonell-Our scouts may have done it again with this guy.
    Crawford-Another nice day for Crawford.
Duvall-The only guy maybe having a worser spring than Brown.
    Perez-Definitely on opening day roster.
Susac-Susac is a better all around player.Hector's a nice trade piece.Teams might be interested in a switch hitting C.
Peavy-I forget how good he was down the stretch for us last year.
Bullpen-Strickland still fighting for that last spot.
    Pagan-Big day tomorrow.

    1. Susac may be a better all-around catcher, but you can't prove it from this spring's performances. The other wild card in this deck is whether Timmy is comfortable pitching to Susac. That just could end up being the deciding factor here. There is more to baseball than statistics.

    2. And Panik has a spring K rate of 15.6% which is about what he did last year. He has just 6 hits in 56 AB on Balls In Play, so if you believe in BABIP theory, he's not going to sustain that any more than the .345 BABIP he had last year.

    3. Nice to see Panik heating up after his slow start....maybe he was working on improving his slugging, but once the season starts next month, he'll integrate everything together.

  2. Our defense is going to be stellar again this year. We have good defensive depth too off the bench. We should stash Duffy and Susac until we need them either on the team or as part of a package to trade for another front line starter. If Pagan and Pence prove to be healthy and we add another solid starter at some point this team can make it close.

  3. Agree with Billy Baseball -

Stash Duffy and Susac. Adrianza is a valuable trade piece, perhaps with some spot starts and some good AB's he builds his trade value to open up a spot for Duffy. Catcher is a bit trickier, but Susac is young enough that I think you let the Hector give the bigs another go and give him a chance to stick. Susac's talent won't be able to be suppressed for too long, but we don't have the luxury of keeping 3 catchers and Sanchez is the only tradable one, so might as well try to boost his value a bit too.

    1. Gotta think that at some point, there either has to be a trade of Hector Sanchez or else Posey moves out from behind the plate to some other position. If you listen to Peavy, though, the pitchers might revolt if Posey came off catcher.

  4. Read on his twitter the sad message that Clayton Blackburn just lost his brother. It could be something to keep in mind as we follow his progress throughout the season.
