Spring Training Game Wrap 3/22/2015: Angels 3 Giants 2; Royals 4 Giants 2

The Giants pitching continued it's improved performance in a split squad DH, but the offense continued to struggle to score runs.  Key Lines:

Home Game  Angels 3  Giants 2

Gregor Blanco(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .323.  Blanco is having a stellar spring.  If Pagan can't answer the bell on Opening Day, Blanco should be the CF.  Otherwise he should be in RF in Pence's place.

Matt Duffy(SS)- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .387.  Adrianza is out of options and plays stellar D.  Duffy has options, but the Giants are checking him out at SS.  Heckuva tough decision coming up!  As Baggs pointed out, conservation of organizational talent is a big factor in these decisions, not just the 25 best players at the moment.

Justin Maxwell(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .250.  Maxwell is hitting .346 over his last 8 games.  The Giants are interested in his RH power potential, so don't count him out of a roster spot on Opening Day.

Madison Bumgarner(LHP)- 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.65.  Bummy gave up a first inning dinger then was perfect the rest of the way.

Away Game  Royals 4  Giants 2

Nori Aoki(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .190.  Aoki is hitting .259 over his last 8 games and is 4 for 7 in his last 2.

Hector Sanchez(Catcher)- 1 for 3.  BA= .265.  Susac had a nice game defensively today.  Baggs seems to think whoever catches Timmy's next start has the inside track for the backup catcher job.  I gotta think it's Sanchez's to lose at this point.

Brandon Crawford(DH)- 2 for 4.  BA= .171.  About time for Crawford's bat to start coming around.

Chris Heston(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.00.  Hesto Presto!  Very nice performance in front of the Skipper who managed the travel squad today.  Boch will file that one away in that big noggin for when a callup is needed during the Dog Days.

  1. Blanco-I think Bochy said he'll play CF on the road(if Pagan's injured). And,RF at home until Pence comes back.
    Duffy-It's not even close.
Maxwell-He'll be on the opening day roster.Pence's injury pretty much cemented that.I'm interested to see how he's gonna do.I think he'll be solid. If he's playing. He'll probably hit 7th.That's a good spot in the line up for him.He should get a lot of good pitches to hit.
    Bumgarner-Getting his work in.
Aoki-If Pagan's injured.I lstill like Blanco leading off.
Sanchez-Bochy said Susac's the back up.Good to know we have a solid 3rd guy in AAA.
    Crawford-Not bad for a 4th round pick.
    Heston-Good outing.

    1. I think Blanco playing RF instead of Aoki was under the assumption Pagan would be playing. If Pagan is out, RF-CF will most likely be some combination of Blanco, Perez and Maxwell.

Yes, it's not close with Duffy vs Adrianza if you only look at offense, but Adrianza is better on defense and then you have to account for options. Barring a trade, Adrianza will most likely be on the Opening Day roster with Duffy getting some salt in AAA, not that he seems to need it.

Bochy said Susac was the presumed backup a long time ago. As Baggs said, watch Timmy's next start. They guy behind the plate will most likely start the season as the reserve catcher.

  2. It would be great to have an OF version of Adrianza (too good to give away;but not yet proven and blocked by other players) for a trade.
Pence will be back, but Pagan will miss many games; Giants have a great opportunity for a young OF.

    1. Totally agree. I think we're all assuming that Panik will hit like he did last year but he could easily have his issues for the first month or two. I really hope that he's the second baseman of the future but of course there's no guarantee. I think Adrianza will be on the opening day roster for the reasons KS mention.

  3. I think it is too early to consider trading Ehire when you can still stash Duffy. An injury to Crawford and Panik tanks and you may need them both. Sit tight with them and see how it all plays out. I think we are going to have some trading chips with extra bullpen arms that we are going to have to do something with if we want to make a trade at this time of year.

  4. So the Rockies released Jhoulys Chacin i think we should sign him and let Rags work his magic.

    1. He's still young, but has had pretty serious shoulder injuries, which might be pretty difficult to recover/overcome to a point where he's an effective pitcher again.

  5. Whether Duffy is on the OD roster (sitting) or not (hitting in Sac) is unlikely to make more than a 1-win difference in April. If Adrianza is not on the roster, he's gone, and he has not proved he isn't ML level player. He has been good in spurts. His glove is as good as any Giant IFer.
If it comes down to what IFer is going to be lost, I'd rather lose Arias: he is what he is with little upside.
