Down on the Farm: 8/2/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies beat the Round Rock Express 3-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .239.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 3, 2B, Sac.  BA= .351.
Mitch Lively(RHP)- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.30.

Maybe someone lit a fire under Brown, or maybe he was just due for a good game.  Adrianza stays hot.  Lively has an ERA of 3.49 over his last 10 games.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels lost to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-2:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 2, HR(6), 2 BB. BA= .246.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .240.

The 2 walks by Villalona are almost more impressive than the dinger!

High A  San Jose Giants outslugged the Bakersfield Blaze 15-6:

Brock Bond(2B)- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .252.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 3 for 6, HR(2).  BA= .341.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .280.
Devin Harris(RF)- 4 for 6, 2B, HR(21).  BA= .267.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(6), BB, HBP.  BA= .339.
Ryan Cavan(3B)- 3 for 6.  BA= .291.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 14/2.  ERA= 2.64.

Nice game for padding stat lines.  I think I am most excited about Matt Duffy's performance.  I'm not sure what kind of SS he plays, but it sure looks like he can hit in the pros!

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Charleston River Dogs 6-0:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(3).  BA= .343.
Charles Jones(RF)- 2 for 4, SB(11).  BA= .225.
Shayne Houck(3B)- 1 for 3, HR(4).  BA= .255.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.   ERA= 3.22.
Ian Gardeck(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.80.

Stratton has a 2.91 ERA over his last 10 games.  This might have been his best game of the season so far.  He has pitched 3 fairly strong games in a row.  I am surprised by how many walks he continues to give up at this level.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Spokane Indians 5-2:

Jeremy Sy(SS)- 2 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .276.
John Polonius(2B)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .277.
Jake Shadle(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.20.

Rookie AZL  Cubs cuffed the Giants 6-4:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 1 for 3, BB, HBP, SB(10).  BA= .324.
Rando Moreno(2B)- 2 for 4, SB(7).  BA= .366.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .385.
Nick Gonzalez(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
William Simpson(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Ariel Hernandez(RHP)- 1.1, IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.80.

Looks like Paulino and Moreno worked a double steal in the first inning with Paulino scoring.  Love Gonzalez' size, 6'4", 220 lbs and like what we've seen in a SSS so far.  This is Ariel Hernandez' 5'th pro season.  He is 21 yo.

DSL  Padres defeated the Giants 6-4:

Nicol Parra(LF-CF, 19 yo)- 1 for 4, BB, 3 SB(18). BA= .261.
Kleiber Rivas(DH, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .257.
Cesar Yanez(RHP, 18 yo)- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.22.

Parra seems to be the latest version of the Jesus Galindo/Randy Ortiz slap-and-dash prototype.  Yanez is listed at 6'5", 175 lbs.

  1. I've been backing the Duffinator for a long time...Flat out a baseball player---does everything and the little things--- and great to see him easily succeed in SJ..I just have the feeling he will continue succeeding as he rises through the ranks, which may be soon because TOMLINSON is completely overmatched in Richmond....

Agree about VILLALONA..The Kid has the power to hit anywhere..but those walks were welcome...Hope they weren't IBB's!!

I was thinking about LIVELY also...I know he's 28 but this is his first year being used as a starter...You look at his starts and either he really has it and dominates or doesn't have it at all (and is wild)..But he's only wild in certain game and in other entire games he is spot on...Sounds Mechanical? I also remember last year (or 2 years ago) reading about scouts talking about the Fresno bullpen and that they loved Lively's stuff and that he was ready for ML......All i'm saying is that, even at 28, there may be something there..

Great to finally see a dominant STRATTON performance in LOW A....Wouldn't mind seeing Blach moved up to RICH and just give Stratton a whirl in SJ at the end of the year..Just to gauge

    1. Completely agree re: Stratton and Blach. Blach has been solid all year. Let's see how AA looks on him. Stratton has a 3.2 ERA, get him out of Low-A! If Agosta could stay healthy for a couple of starts, I feel that he's wasting time in Augusta as well. These are your top picks, challenge them.

    2. I was really interested to see what Duffy could do and saw two games this past week in SJ. Very impressive at the plate in the first game, not just in terms of production (3-8 with a walk and 2 strikeouts in the two games I saw) but more so in his overall demeanor and approach. Seems to have a real plan at the plate and sees a lot of pitches.

The only thing that worried me a little was his arm at short, definitely didn't seem to have the arm strength to make plays deep in the hole, and also doesn't seem to get enough on his throws while turning two. SSS of course, but that's the impression I got after about 7-8 throws overall. Pretty decent range so in a pinch, I'm sure he could play SS at the highest levels, but I'm thinking he projects more as a 2B long-term.

    3. Would definitely be an interesting move to promote Stratton and give him one of the playoff starts like they did with Blackburn last year to see how he reacts.

      Divisional finals starters

      Game #1 - Crick
      Game #2 - Blach
      Game #3 - Stratton
Game #4 - Mejia (if needed)
Game #5 - Blackburn (if needed)

    4. IMO, all you need is a couple of looks to judge things like arm strength, so it could be in issue in terms of Duffy's ability to stick at SS.

  2. Are Adrianza and Angel becoming real prospects again? How is their D? I know Adrianza had the all glove, no hit tag for a long time and seems to be breaking out in AAA.

    1. I think they are both serious prospects. Angel may still be a bit raw, but his bat has come a long ways since his career got derailed by legal issues. As I have said several times, the bat has a chance to be special!

We also discussed Adrianza recently. I believe his bat has been severely underrated. If you look at his K and BB rates, he has more than held his own everywhere he's been. He's not a .350 hitter, but he has the potential to be a league average hitter for the position and the glove is special.

    2. And given Adrianza's option clock, we'll see him sooner rather than later anyway. In fact, I think he's all but assured a September call-up.
