Down on the Farm: 7/31/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Round Rock Express 5-3:

Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, 3B, Sac., SB(2).  BA= .333.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .298.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.10.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(23).  ERA= 4.47.

Adrianza keeps hitting.  I think he once stole 30+ bases for San Jose.  Strange line for Kickham, but at least he got the QS.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 3, HR(11), BB.  BA= .237.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.70.

Duvall seems to have gotten his power stroke back in gear.

High A  San Jose Giants topped the Visalia Rawhide 5-2:

Jeff Arnold(C)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .257.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.30.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(6).  ERA= 3.38.

Over his last 9 games for SJ(interrupted by an emergency start for Fresno), Mejia has an ERA of 2.70 with 49 K's against just 11 BB's in 49.2 IP.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets squeezed past the Rome Braves 3-2:

Andrew Cain(CF)- 2 for 3, Sac.  BA= .257.
Shawn Payne(RF-LF)- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .308.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.76.

Johnson has 3 consecutive scoreless outings with 2 IP or more.

Short Season  Spokane Indians outlasted the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-4 in 11 innings:

Blake Miller(.267) and John Polonius(.266)- 2 hits each.  Nothing else to see here.

Rookie AZL  Cubs beat the Giants 2-1:

Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .323.
Donald Snelton(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.69.
Michael Connolly(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.35.
Dusten Knight(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.86.

DSL  Giants pounded the Twins 12-2:

Gustavo Cabrera(CF, 17 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(13).  BA= .211.
Carlos Cartegena(RF, 19 yo)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .220.
Robert Antunez(2B, 17 yo)- 0 for ), 5 BB, SB(4).  BA= .150.
Eusebio Encarnacion(RHP, 18 yo)- 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.91.

Antunez has discovered the key to success in the DSL.  Don't swing the bat!  OK.  Listen up, team.  Here 's the deal in the DSL.  You have a bunch of very young, very hard throwing pitchers who have no idea where the ball is going facing a bunch of very young hitters who haven't seen a lot of this kind of velocity before.  You are going to have a lot of BB's and a lot of K's.  That's the context!!

  1. DrB,

Do you think the Giants have enough prospects to trade for Giancarlo? Due to the emergence of all these pitching prospects maybe Sabean could trade a couple of them (Crick and Escobar) with someone like Belt or Crawford for Stanton?

    1. The Marlins want someone who is young, and a huge talent, and either extremely close to the big leagues or already in the big leagues. We don't have anything for him at this time

    2. I don't think we can have enough pitching prospects.

And we can never have enough cheap pitching signings like Vogelsong and Gaudin either.

      Why?

      Because you never know.

Baseball, like life, is not very predictable. More likely to be random. Better to take small bets and spread them out. Go for a Scutaro...

    3. Giancarlo Stanton is not coming here.

  2. The hitters I would like to see get a september callup are F. Pegeiro, J Monelll, and C Dominguez. Dominguez is interesting because of his power and he does play 3rd base. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Gary Brown, he doesn't deserve to be called up with a disappointing 240 BA at Fresno.

Drb-I agree that the only way they could have addressed their lack of pitching depth in the high minors was via big trade. Its unfortunate that they had to bring up pitchers like Kickham and Surkamp before they were ready for MLB. It makes it look like the player failed when they don't pitch well, but to me thats an organizational failure. Why couldn't they sign a couple of 6 year free agents..Anyway its water under the bridge. I want to see Hembree called up in September alomg with M Kickham.

    1. I wouldn't mimnd seeing the first three you mention when rosters are expanded and definetley a NO GO for me on ZGary Brown..Needs to get better and work harded to deserve a shot...One outside shot, for me, would be J. HERRERA the OF and best player at Richmond..I know it would mean skipping Freso, but he has been around awhile at many different levels...Give him a shot!!!

Of all the starter in the Giants system, I would love to see Surkampo throw 2-3 more good games down in Fresno and then be called back up to be in the rotation (over Zito and/or part of a 6-man rotation) for the rest of the year to see what hi "new arm" really has....Love Escobar and the pitchers below him, but too early...

    2. What would the current starters think with respect to going with a 6-person rotation?

  3. I cannot find a scouting report on Dylan Brooks. Do you happen to know anything about him? All I know is his size, and that has been enough for me to get excited about so far

    1. No scouting reports but there are some videos floating around like on Youtube. Love what I see.

  4. Oh, and what's the deal with Jacob Dunnington and why is he pitching in Augusta/SAL again after pitching well in SJ in 2011 and Rich in 2012, and even SJ earlier this year?

    1. I think Dunnington has had some injury issues and is rehabbing.

    2. I've always hoped and still hope that Dunnington can be as good as or better than Dunning.

  5. Kickham's line is weird. They said he had a no-hitter into the 7th though.

  6. I'm sure we're all relieved that the Giants have indeed re-signed recently DFA'd Hunter Strickland to a minor league contract. TJ surgery, most likely will be ready in May-June of 2014, he had a great year until the injury.

Kickham is a crazy lefty. He walks fools from time to time. No-hitters and threats of no-hitters seem to be spreading all over the org now...

The big 3 of Crick/Mejia/Blackburn came correct this week.

    1. I'm relieved, he did really well for us, you never know if they run off, like Andrew Miller did.

I'm getting more and more impressed with Kickham, I'm looking forward to what he does next season, hopefully get some starts in Sept when vets like Cain are shut down to rest their arms.
