Down on the Farm: #43 Kentrell Hill

#43 Kentrell Hill, OF. 6'0", 180 lbs. BD: 10/27/1990. B-R, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .256/.316/.360

College(JC): .402/.482/.698, 11 HR, 36 SB in 203 AB.

Kentrell Hill is a true 5 tool player. His hitting stats from JC ball speak for themselves. He has also runs a 4.47 40 and has been clocked at 90+ MPH from the mound and OF. The Giants drafted him in the 10'th round of last year's draft. He signed quickly enough to get in some time in rookie ball. His line doesn't look to exciting but over his last 10 games he put up a line of .320/.393/.520. The big concern is with is quality of competition so far. I would think the Giants will take it slow and keep him in extended spring training and then on to Salem-Keizer for the 2012 season.

There is nice interview with Kentrell on the blog site Giants Cove. If you google image him you'll find some nice pics too. If you squint hard, you can see a young Willie Mays in a a baseball uniform. Gotta say, Kentrell is in the running to be named best looking Giants prospect in a baseball uniform. I don't know if the gangsta pics are of him or someone else. If it's him, I hope he was just messin' around. He seems like a nice country kid in the interview.

    1. How does he compare with other 5-tool guys like Fairly and Chuckie Jones when they were at his age?

    2. He may well be Fred Lewis 2.0, but having Fred Lewis 2.0 ranked #43 in the farm system means it's a pretty darn deep system. I think Fred Lewis had the potential to be an all star level performer on talent alone. For some reason, he was never able to get over that last hump of going from a useful bench player to solid regular.

Fairley and Chuckie Jones both came out of high school. I would say Hill has more speed than either of them. Jones probably has more power potential. I think Hill has faced tougher competition in JC ball than Jones ever faced in HS prior to being drafted. Fairley appeared to have power potential but it just never developed. At this point I think Fairley is close to being a failed prospect. That is probably Hill's floor, but I think his ceiling is a starting CF in MLB.
