Down on the Farm: #38 Ryan Cavan

#38 Ryan Cavan, 2B. 5'10", 180 lbs. BD: 6/28/1987. B-S, T-R.

High A: .270/.352/.435, 38 2B, 5 3B, 12 HR, 10 SB.

Ryan Cavan was drafted in the 16'th round in 2009. He has put up similar numbers at each of 3 professional levels since then hitting for a decent average with good plate discipline and some power. He finished off 2011 with a flourish hitting .341 over his last 10 games. He's an older prospect who will turn 25 yo mid-season so he's going to have to prove himself at each stop. The big test in AA should come this season.

  1. Scrappy middle infielder from UCSB. The Eastern will be a big time test. Cavan is way under the radar. If he can maintain most of the stats he just put up... Also he has a sweet Jeff Kent CHP mustache. That counts for a lot.

Yo DrB - after reviewing all the Baggs/Schulman/blogs I am even more convinced Sabean is crazy enough to sign both Tim and Cain. Several times quoted - room in the budget for both. They're just jockeying for position a bit.

Also, it was nice to get a little confirmation that Affeldt was Wilson assurance. I got beat up a little on MCC for suggesting that was the case. Sure Casilla might be the first guy out, but the Gints don't trust him.

    1. Yes, I noticed Sabes specifically referred to the uncertainties with Wilson as a reason for the slight overspend on Affeldt, although he and Boch strongly hinted that Casilla would be first in line for the closer job. It's just that if the closer goes down, everybody else in the pen moves up a notch.

    2. Hopefully, the Giants realized how much of a Epic Fail it is when a team is missing a closer, based on what happened after Nen. That's why it was reported that Sabean is working on an extension with Wilson because we don't have anybody looking ready to take his place before our control is over.

And that's why it's good to keep guys who could potentially close for you. As I've noted since we signed Affeldt, most analysts I read at that time thought that Affeldt had closer ability for a reliever's price.

Why not see if Casilla could do the job? He has more of the classic closer skill set, able to flash the fastball by people. If he can, then great, else we still have Affeldt. Plus, if Jeremy's the closer, we then only got one lefty killer in the pen.

I don't think it's crazy to sign both Tim and Matt. It would be crazy to go 8 years, as Lincecum's opening asking price was, but if we can get control over both for the next 5 years, not so crazy, that covers until they are 32-33.

Sabean also made clear as part of the FanFest festivities that he is trying to sign both of them, whether that's doable is the question.

    3. i think it is more crazy to extend wilson then extending both tim and matt because it is a lot easier to develop reliever prospects plus we have hembree on the way and casilla could fill the role.

    4. Given the report that Sabean took a year away from Cain because of elbow chips, I think they understand the problems of giving a closer a long extension. I assume they are just trying to extend him a couple of years, that would give Wilson some security and stability (plus he loves it here, I think, he fits right in with SF). This is not crazy in the short run because all the big salaries will be dropping off the payroll in a year or two, Rowand, Zito, Huff, Sanchez, maybe Pagan and/or Melky too.

But yeah, if they extend him as long as Timmy or Matty, that would be crazy and I would not be for that at all, as much as I love Wilson and his beard.

  2. why can't the giants afford both tim and matt they have rowand's 10m off books after this year, huff's 10m after next year, zito's 18m next year, and your only talking about a couple million dollar increase in both their salaries. plus there isn't anybody other than posey that is going to get a mega raise in the next few years with sandoval already locked up

    2. I think the Giants can afford to sign both Timmy and Matt. The crunch is going to come in 3-4 years when they also have to decide what to do long term with Posey, Sandoval and MadBum. The Giants philosophy has always been to worry about those things when the time comes.

    3. but even then matt and Tim's contracts will be closer to the end then to the beginning so they could still have the budget
