Down on the Farm: #49 Demondre Arnold

#49 Demondre Arnold, RHP. 6'3", 208 lbs. BD: 3/18/1992.

Rookie AZL: 1-0, 1.69, 26.2 IP, 8 BB, 32 K GO/AO= 1.47.

Demondre Arnold was drafted out of JC ball in round 25 of the 2011 draft. Great looking player with ideal size for a pitcher. BA has him throwing in the low 90's. Their comment was that he is quite raw, but his K and BB ratios from his pro debut look like they're from a guy who knows how to pitch. Looks like the Giants got excellent value for a round 25 pick and Arnold is somebody worth watching for in his first full season of pro ball. I would think Augusta would be a logical placing for him. Most likely out of the bullpen.

  1. Okay, back to the nuts and bolts of bus riding prospects. I really like this pick. Good stats, good size, good velocity w/control. Augusta slotting would be be a solid choice. Would like to see him tried as both a starter and reliever and then pushed to San Jose if he shines.

  2. Wow, 4.0 K/BB ratio, under 3 BB/9, roughly 11 K/9, AND he's a ground-ball generator. Plus, at 19 YO last season, he was probably very age appropriate for the Rookie AZL, heck, the average age for batters was 20.0, so he was actually relatively young for the league, magnifying his accomplishments even more! Yes, excellent value, makes me think of the Jonathan Sanchez draft selection, way back in the draft, but comes in blazing.

Looking at the stats, there is a Miguel Ferrer who had great stats there too, 20 YO, but did better than Demondre in his stats (less H/9, less BB/9, more K/9), though that's expected given the extra year, but still pretty good numbers. I don't recognize the name, so unless he's #50, he might not be on your list, but I think deserves at least an honorable mention.

FYI, I was searching on where Baggs new blog would be (so if someone sees it on CSNBA, please pass it along to everyone else; his new twitter handle is @BaggsCSN), and ran across a news item: Travis Blackley, who was with the Giants briefly, forgot which trade that was, is apparently signed to return and pitch in AAA, and given his history, probably as SP backup.

Oh, just ran across this, probably is the place where he'll blog but nothing there yet, nor any way to RSS it: http://www.csnbayarea.com/baggarly_blog

  3. Ferrer is a DSL graduate. I think he spent two full seasons down there. Yes, he is Honorable Mention.

Travis Blackley was a highly rated pitching prospect for the Mariners once upon a time a long time ago. I think he had an arm injury and never got his velocity back.
