College Corner: Friday Starts

College teams generally put their best pitcher on the mound on Friday nights, the first game of a 3 game weekend series. Friday box scores are a good place to look for outstanding pitching performances and get a handle on how draft eligible pitchers are performing. Here's a quick rundown from last night's college games with some of the pitchers I'm interested in following this season:

Michael Roth, LHP, Sr. South Carolina: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. vs VMI.

Mark Appel, RHP, Jr, Stanford: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. vs Vanderbilt.

David Starn, LHP, Sr, Kent State: 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K's vs Georgia Tech.

Brady Rodgers, RHP, Jr., Arizona State: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's vs Western Michigan.

Eric Erickson, LHP, Sr(6'th yr), Miami of FL: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. Coming off TJ surgery.

Kurt Heyer, RHP, Sr., Arizona: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's vs North Dakota State.

Kyle Hansen, RHP, Jr. St Johns: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K's vs Michigan State.

Justin Jones, RHP, Jr. Cal: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's vs Pacific.

Joey Wagman, RHP, Jr., Cal Poly: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's vs Oklahoma State.

Dane Quist, LHP, Sr., UC Davis: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 12 K's, vs Utah.

Kyle Zimmer, RHP, Jr. USF: 4 IP, 1 H, 0, 0 BB, 3 K's vs. San Jose State.

Kyle Kraus, RHP, Sr. Portland: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's vs. Stephen F Austin.

Martin Agosta, RHP, Jr, St Mary's: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K's vs Southern Utah.

Pat Light, RHP, Jr., Monmouth: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. 6'6", 200 lb RHP reportedly hitting 96 MPH in the first inning.

As you can see, the picking are a bit slim for college pitching this year. Jake Barrett of Arizona State, Chris Beck of Georgia Southern and Jeffrey Gibbs of Maine are 3 more names to watch for in future games.

  1. Justin Jones should be an interesting guy to look at. He has a pretty good curve ball. He is quite a character.

I'm moseying over to USC tomorrow. Too damn curious about Adam Brett Walker. He hit a 2-run double off the CF wall last night, his only hit in 4 ABs.

  2. How did Marcus Stroman out of Duke pitch? I have a new thing for these short athletic starters that can throw gas a la Timmy and Oswalt.
