For those of you who remember the early Giants teams after the move to SF and who might want to take a trip down memory lane, The Hardball Times has started a series looking at 3 of the more successful teams from that era and all the trades they made with each other and with other teams. One factoid I guess I was aware of but had never really thought about: Willie Mays was 27 years old in 1958 the Giants first year in SF! One more I wasn't aware of: The Giants traded Ernie Broglio to St. Louis. He was the guy who the Cards later flipped to the Cubs for Lou Brock!
Anyway, The Hardball Times is linked over on Fangraphs for those of you who are interested. Great stuff!

This is off topic but hilarious. On Baggarly's live chat someone asked if the Giants could get back Zack Wheeler for Torres, Ramirez, and Burriss. I almost fell out of my chair laughing.
ReplyDeleteThe one that got away, Roger.
ReplyDeleteYou might have told the guy to throw in Beltran and they'd have had a deal.
Trade(s) coming. My white whale Angel Pagan? Andres no longer a Giant? DrB get ready to fire it up!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, Baggs posted that exact trade as a scenario. With Ramirez thrown in to the Mets...
ReplyDeletedont like the proposed trade...that is all
ReplyDeleteHave to see what it is, but I proposed Ramirez for Pagan a while back as a way to avoid Coco Crisp.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a done deal. Ramirez and Torres for Pagan.
ReplyDeleteWellllllll.....ok
Official. Cracks me up. One of my favorite Giants who was on the cusp. I think I like it, but it definitely hurts to throw in Torres. Pagan is a sweet player though, very underrated.
ReplyDeleteman...really hope nate wins rf...cuz melky and pagan in the of is gonna be a disaster
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, Bacci, why do you say that?
ReplyDeleteI'd say it shakes out Pagan in CF, Melky moves to LF and Nate stays in RF. That is a superior defensive OF! It probably means that Huff goes back to 1B and Belt starts the season in Fresno. Not so sure I like that part, but I think a little more salt wouldn't hurt Belt.
doc...are you serious? melky in lf is ok, but pagan's defensive skills are sorely lacking
ReplyDeleteand i hope he can up his walk rate
anyway...torres is pure class...read his comments to baggs...gonna miss him
Its unlikely now, but Beltran has seen the Giants improve the O with Melky and get a leadoff guy like he said they should. Ortiz has accepted arb from Boston. Where is Beltran's market now? There's plenty of time for crazy stuff to happen, AL team come in and blow it up. The crying poor seems genuine, but I'm not ruling out the outside chance this is the dekes of dekes and for a 2 year 12-15 they'll do some rainy day funding. Not even sure I want that anymore, but its not over til its over.
ReplyDeleteHard to evaluate the OF. If you're comparing to Rowand, yes we got a lot better. Torres is a great defensive OF but his batting troubles are hard to evaluate. Ross had his struggles as well. Picture this: they sign Beltran they have 3 switch hitting OFs to go with Panda. That is pretty interesting, 4 switch hitters to go with Posey, Huff, Freddy and Pretty Boy Floyd.
Bacci - I've watched a fair amount of Mets games, Pagan isn't to Torres level but he is a good OF.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about Torres. Pure class, one of my favorite Giants, and a huge part of the ring.
Got my analysis up. I agree this certainly meets every bit of Beltran's demand for the Giants to fix the top of their lineup. Still seems a bit unlikely but stranger things have happened. It does seem like the Giants are playing possum a bit with their rather loud public comments about how little they can afford.
