The Giants put up 4 runs in the first inning. The Rockies answered with 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning but it was the Giants that added on for a wire-to-wire win. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 3 for 5, R RBI. BA= .330. Congratulations to Arraez for making the All-Star roster. It is very well deserved. His 3 hits raised his BA back up to .330 but he still trails Otto Lopez for both the NL and MLB batting crown by .011.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 5, 2B, R. BA= .283. Matt Chapman's injury gives Schmitt his natural position back. He's showing he belongs by both hitting and making spectactular fielding plays. Ironically Chapman's injury may complicate Schmitt's future by making Chappy harder to trade.
Willy Adames SS- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB, R, 2 RBI. BA= .232. Adames capped the scoring in the top of the first inning with a 2-run double.
Bryce Eldridge DH- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(7), R, 2 RBI. BA= .280. This kid seems to make adjustments really fast. He's batting .286 over his last 7 games after going 2 for 25 in his previous 7.
Victor Bericoto LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .298. 2 doubles but did not figure into the scoring. Keep putting him out there until he proves it's a fluke.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.45. Ray recovered to pitch a Quality Start after giving up 3 in the first inning.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(8). ERA= 4.14. Shaky but got the Save with the 3-run lead. Maybe there's a team out there that will look at the Saves and not the ERA at the trade deadline?
Tyler Mahle RHP tries for a series win this afternoon facing Tanner Gordon RHP who comes in with a 6.69 ERA.
Matt Gage was placed in the IL with an elbow sprain after throwing 51 pitches in 1.1 IP on Friday. Gage indicated he expects to need Tommy John surgery. His velocity was down and he was throwing only fastballs by the end of his final appearance raising more questions about the level of communication on the team. He indicated he knew he was seriously injured but "wanted to leave it all out there." Gage was on the IL with a knee injury from from June 2-16. He gave up 4 runs in a total of 1 IP in his first two appearances after returning but had two short scoreless stints before Friday.
Sounds like Gage was the one who didn’t say anything about being injured. If a player doesn’t say something or react to an apparent injury then how is the team supposed to know you’re hurt?

ReplyDeleteHow many more pitchers will Vitello be allowed to get hurt? At Gage's age Tommy John is a potential career ender. I know ownership and Posey don't care but, expect Rob Manfred to be calling for an explanation.
ReplyDeleteAlex Pavlovic, who is generally quite conservative in his analysis, has commented at some length about a concern for a systemic lack of communication in this organization based on things he has heard from multiple sources.
DeleteChapman seems to be one of the players who provides veteran leadership. Not sure if I want to see him traded., this team doesn't have enough of that. Sounds like Gage wanted to pitch threw it, and didnt want to notify the coaches .Teammates will respect that but wished he thought more about his health. It surprises me how this org continues to make unforced errors regarding public relations .it started with Greg Johnson 's break even comment and I remember him or was it Larry Baer saying no multi year contracts given to pitchers. I get the risk, but don't think fans want to hear that. It's better that they don't say that in public.

DeleteDon't remember exactly what happened on that play, sounds like a heat of the moment exchange between two teammates, not a big deal, except we could read Chapman's lips, lol! Brought back memories when a teammate once said that to me, lol. When Yaz left last year, he said something like this team needs to play with more fire. Team play was sloppy overall.. Bob Brenly commented before a dbacks/Giants game this season the Giants didn't look focused.. Coaching staff gotta prepare the team to play but it's up to the players to play hard. and play well. I heard a Podcaster, FP Santangelo, could be wrong,, saying team needs more veteran leadership.
DeleteIDK, "Veteran Leadership" sounds a bit like a cliche. The Giants do not have a shortage of highly paid veteran players some of whom had reputations for providing "veteran leadership." Again, we get back to whether Buster picked the wrong veterans or if the manager is failing to create an atmosphere that supports veteran leadership and gives the veterans something to support.

DeleteI'll leave it that I think it's good for a team to have veterans that show the younger players how a major leaguer should play the game. Yaz was that player for Jung Hu Lee. Maybe Chapman is that player for Schmitt. The veteran should say something if they see a young player not hustling for example. I've heard people say these players get along too well, not enough players who play with an edge.
DeleteI have not read of heard any mention of Chapman's Tourrette's, but even if he has it, I don't think that explains the verbal dressing down he gave Schmitt which appeared to be intentional and directed. I have no problem with the concept of veteran leadership. I do think it's overrated and does not necessarily carry over from one clubhouse to another. Again, the Giant have no shortage of highly paid veterans so if they are not providing leadership that comes back to whether it was wise for Posey to acquire them and whether the Manager is providing an environment conducive to player leadership.
DeleteOwnership seems to be willing to OK big multi year contracts to veteran position players but won't OK multi year contracts to good veteran pitchers. It makes no sense to me, especially when the pitcher wanted to pitch in SF. An agent during last winter meetings wondered if Buster could convince owners to spend $ on pitching to compete. How true that turned out to be. While Buster, ZM, TonyV deserve part of the blame for this season I think ownership needs to evaluate the decisions they are making too, Are they part of the problem acquiring good pitching?
