Logan Webb pitched 6 innings of shut out ball before stumbling in the 7'th inning. Solo home runs by Rafael Devers and Willy Adames plus and unearned run were not enough to prevent an extra-inning loss. Key Lines:
Bryce Eldridge DH- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .274. The first two batters in the lineup, Arraez and Eldridge reached base 5 of 10 PA's but did not figure into the scoring mainly because the 3, 4 and 5 batters went a combined 2 for 13 with a walk.
Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 5, HR(20), R, RBI. BA= .245. Devers appears to be well on his way to surpassing 30 HR's on the season. Is that enough production for the size of his contract?
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(17), R, RBI. BA= .230. Adames fell off the pace for 30 HR's but HR's in consecutive games after the All-Star Break get him closer to being on track. Maybe Adames might produce better with an occasional day off?
Logan Webb RHP- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, 2 HBP, 10/3 GO/AO. ERA= 3.87. It's a Quality Start but Webb was cruising to a scoreless start when he gave up a 3-run bomb to Cole Young after hitting a batter on an 0-2 pitch then walking the next batter on 4 pitches. That tied the game setting up a walk-off win in extra-innings for the Mariners.
The loss was the Giants 6'th time failing to extend a 3-game win streak this season.
Robbie Ray LHP goes for the series win today facing Logan Gilbert RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.32.
Jim Callis of mlb.com reports the Giants signed #4 overall draft choice, Jackson Flora RHP, with a signing bonus approximately $1 M below the slot bonus which frees up considerable bonus money to sign later round picks who will probably be looking for above-slot bonuses.
Yes 30 home runs is enough for the size of the contract. We are in 2026, where the going rate for such players is an astronomical number. It costs money to get players in this league. If he was a 40-homer type of player then he would be making even more money than what he’s making now. This is the price of business
ReplyDeleteIf you go by fWAR= $8 M in value, it's close but I think a slight overpay in AAV given Devers defensive limitations but the gap between his cost and value will likely only get worse from here on out. There are plenty of 30 HR guys who are making less in both AAV and in total contract value than Devers.

DeleteFangraphs rates most of the team negatively with just Arraez and Chapman being very positive and at least one of them will most likely be gone within 2 weeks.
Schmitt is probably underrated after being shuffled around all year. He's not Chapman but he doesn't look bad filling in at 3rd, his natural position.
I like Logan Webb, he's a great pitcher, who deserves to take advantage of the opportunities that come up in Baseball for himself but I was concerned that participating in the World BASEBALL classic would negatively effect his regular season performance. While there is no direct evidence that participating had a negative effect, it does look like the early ramp up rhat he had to do did contribute to the knee injury that caused him to go on the IL for a month, which hurt the team. He didn't pitch in the all star game which was a team decision that he needed the rest. I remember Fp Santangelo saying that an unnamed Nats pitcher once told him participating in the WBC did mess up his regular season pitching..We'll see what happens the rest of the season. Glad they signed Jackson Flora early, hope he gets on a field for an introduction to pro ball, Logan Webb lobbied the FO to draft him.

ReplyDeleteDevers has only been in the top 10 of HR hitters once in his 10-year career finishing #8 with 38 in 2021.
He was on track for 32 (+/-) in 2025 when he was traded and finished with 35 overall last year.
His projection for 2026 is 33 +/-.
Giants had to make Devers trade. Home run hitters haven't signed with them in the past due to the park. Contract is the price of doing business. Although I never understood why teams would agree to these type of contracts. Padres have similar contracts with Bogarts and Machado.. Their late owner was known as spending what it takes to win

DeleteI think the logic is: Giants need high-average HR hitters and they haven't developed a very good one in a dozen years or so. To get a HR hitter costs buckko bucks, and if said hitters don't WANT to sign here in FA, you need to find a trade partner somehow, too.
DeletePersonality, Posey played a decent hand with the Devers trade, still feel that way even with Kyle Hairston turning suddenly into a full pitcher. Hicks is still getting paid starter money somewhere, no? Lol.
But Devers started this season on a rudderless team, with a whole ton of holes in the lineup to start the season anda fairly confused clubhouse, and an absolutely laughable bullpen and rotation. I think when the team is disfunctional and the lineup suspect everywhere up and down, it's hard to have a great season on a personal level.

Sorry I was trying to say if the opportunity to acquire a 30 + homerun hitter presented itself Buster had to pull the trigger. I'm surprised that owners would agree to take on the contract. It shows that they have the money up to a point. They've had a hard time signing these type of hitters as free agents..I'll say this about Devers he does go out there and plays every day and does produce.i don't watch all the games but he does seem to play hard when he's out on the field

If it was la long term disadvantage to sign a number of players to long contracts, that's on Buster.

I'm hoping that the people high up in the organization can sit down aftdr the season and figure out what happened, why the team struggled so much. Is Grsg Johnson capable of asking the right questions so the right people are held accountable?
