Another late-inning bullpen failure squandered another winning opportunity. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt 3B- 1 for 4, HR(17), R, RBI. BA= .283. Casey has 5 hits in his last 3 games but is batting just .200 over his last 7.
Rafael Devers 1B- 2 for 5, 2 HR(18), 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .248. Devers has 6 HR over his last 8 games.
Drew Gilbert CF- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(4), R, 3 RBI. BA= .243. A 4-hit game helps the old stat line, but Gilbert seems to be finding traction. He's batting .455 over his last 7 games, .370 over his last 15 and .254/.400/.373 over his last 30. Anyone still want to send him back to the minors?
Tyler Mahle RHP- 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. Starting pitching giving up runs early and the bullpen giving up runs late is not a formula for success.
Dylan Smith RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.86. Apparently Caleb Kilian was not available. Smith has been good but wasn't up to holding Saving a 2-run lead in this one. And again, over the course of the season, a lack of Save Opportunities has been a much bigger problem than has Blown Saves.
The Giants return home for a 3-game series against the Blue Jays with Landen Roupp RHP facing former Giant Kevin Gausman RHP who comes in with an ERA of 4.19.
After the break, I would consider having Carson Whisenhunt take Mahle's place in the rotation with the season lost

ReplyDeleteGilbert got his first hit all season off a LHP. If he can unlock that, then we really got something.
ReplyDeleteI have been racking my head how this team is going to end up 15-20 games below its projections. And I have ultimately concluded that 2026 is just the inverse of 2021. That season the majority of the team ended up at the high end of their projections. This team it seems like the majority hit the low end.
ReplyDeleteI was critical of Buster and the organization in the offseason, but I think the team's true talent is might be 10 games better than what we have seen so far.
