MLBTR reports the Mariners are looking for a RH bat and are willing to trade Emerson Hancock RHP to get one. Hancock is a former #6 overall draft pick out of Georgia. He's been slower developing than anticipated and had 3 mediocre seasons prior to this year when he's been better. Here's this year's pitching line:
6-4, 3.16, 105.1 IP, 8.29 K/9, 2.22 BB/9, 1.02 GB/FB, 3.72 FIP, 4.32 xERA.
Average FB velocity is 95.5 MPH. He is not arbitration eligible until 2028 and does not reach free agency until 2031. He has an Option.
Q: Do the Giants offer either Heliot Ramos or Casey Schmitt?

Casey offers way too much positional versatility to only yield Hancock, in my opinion. Ramos has flashes of being a good young player, but mental lapses and extended slumps make me less bullish on him. Schmitt seems to be the type of guy you'd want to keep around in a rebuild, as he's plug-and-play in 3-4 positions, while decent left fielders seem historically a little easier to come by. Just my 2 cents.

DeleteAlthough Schmitt appears to be a year older than Ramos, they are actually nearly exactly 6 months apart.

Without Ramos in 2027, the Giants would open yet another season with a different LFer.
ramos, yes. nice guy, average LF, blocks others. top of his trade value now. won't be controllable when we are good in 2-3 years.
ReplyDeleteI would trade 3 more years of Ramos for 5 years of a potential(I did say potential) mid rotation starter. The Giants have the players to cover the loss of Ramos....plus their minor league system is much richer is position players than pitching. They are going to lose Ray, either through a trade or as a free agent. Mahle and Houser....well...enough said. They need pitching period.

Probably Ramos but I doubt the Mariners give up Hancock for Victor Bericoto. No dis on Bericoto but they are looking for more of an established MLB player.

DeleteYes but prefer Kirby. A little shocked by what the Sox gave up for Mead. Early has all the signs of a future ace doesn’t that make you think its a sellers market and maybe Arraez could fetch a similar return?

DeleteKirby and Hancock are very similar pitchers. Kirby may have a slight edge in some secondary stats but Hancock is a year younger and cost-controlled for 2 years longer.
