Trevor McDonald was pummeled for 11 hits and 8 runs in 2.1 IP. By then, the game was effectively over. Key Lines:
Heliot Ramos RF- 2 for 4, 2 R. BA= .279. Ramos is batting .385 in July.
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, RBI. BA= .327. The All-Star 2B had the only Giants double on the night. Otto Lopez has also been hot so Arraez now trails him in the batting race by .016.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 2.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 5/0 GO/AO. ERA= 5.46. You can look at this line and say he suffered the wrath of the BABIP gods, but most of the hits were of the line drive variety. One of two things can happen to a sinker/groundball pitcher: 1. He may be slightly elevating his pitches which can be their kryptonite. 2. If the approach angle of the pitches becomes too monotonous, the batters can adjust their launch angle.
Adrian Houser RHP- 5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, 8/2 GO/AO. ERA= 4.95. May be time to bring Houser back to the rotation. In 4 appearances since being sent to the bullpen his composite line is 14 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 1.29.
Spencer Miles RHP(Blue Jays)- 4 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.95. Miles is a former Giants 4'th round draft pick who missed a lot of time with injuries. They left him off the 40-man roster in November and he was selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the BJ's and has thrived out of their bullpen. I guess the Giants needed the room on the 40-man roster for Jason Foley RHP and/or Sam Hentges LHP.
Logan Webb RHP tries for a series win this afternoon facing Dylan Cease RHP who comes in with a 2.79 ERA.
After Today, the rotation after the break should consist of Webb, Ray (until traded), Roupp, Houser, and Whisenhunt with Mahle moving to the bullpen. What also could be better news is that they may be able to flip Houser at the deadline. McDonald should go back to Sacramento until the trade deadline with some homework.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Whisenhunt is ready, either, is he? He's got a 4.42 ERA in Sacramento this season with 82 strikeouts and 37 walks in 76 innings. I know the PCL is a hitter-friendly league, but this pushing young arms up into the major league rotation when they haven't exactly been forcing the issue is going to make for a long second half. I'm afraid the Giants' front office has left themselves too short-handed at the major league level. Possibly using a combination of buying (arms) and selling (position players) at the trade deadline might be another way to fill some holes?

DeleteWhisenhunt was dominating AAA but had two rough starts after being sent back down to AAA that ballooned his ERA. But that 4.42 era is actually still really good and amongst the league leaders in AAA. Yes he absolutely should be in the Giants rotation. Is he ready? At this point this is his second full season in AAA, he’s 25 years old and he’s a top prospect every year. It doesn’t matter if you think he’s ready or not, he’s absolutely paid his dues to deserve an extended shot to see what he can do in the bigs. He has a chance to be part of the future while Houser, Mahle and Ray are not part of the future, so it 100% makes sense to let him start for the last three months of the season

ReplyDeleteNow the Giants have 4 games at home against Colorado — a battle for the bottom — the loser of the series will be NL LAST going into the All Star break.
(It should be noted that the Mets are also in the running for FAILURE in the National League, showing yet again that money can buy neither Love nor baseball success.)

Buster is safe being Himself and a Newbee which probably saves Vitello who is owed a lot of money to learn how to do his job, leaving poor Minasian to take the fall, which ain't gonna make no difference...
Baggs wrote some about causes involved in Gianta pitching deficiencies which made sense sad.to say. iit expised 3 levels of failure in the organization.. over evaluating the strength of the pitching in the organization. Lack of development in those pitchers despite having their 3rd wave of pitching coaches in 4 years..Ownership not providing enough resources to Buster and FO to upgrade pitching staff. which makes no sense.tio me. Tyler Roger's Jay's contract 3 yes $51 mil. Giants couldn't afford that? Wow!
ReplyDelete$17 M/year is a lot for a reliever, especially a non-closer. As dominant as the BJ"s were yesterday, they are also a sub-.500 team. I would also come back and say ownership gave Buster plenty of resources to upgrade the pitching. He chose to spend it on Willy Adames and Rafael Devers.
DeleteI agree with you Doc, unfortunate that the market price for good pitching has skyrocketed. But ownership said this off-season that they won't spend on giving pitchers multiyear contracts because the organization was high on their young pitching.in the system. It never made sense that ownership would take on Adames and Devers contracts but not offer a contract to a Kevin Gausman who wanted to stay,, and what about Carlos Rodan. I'm wonder if ownership would even let Buster spend a lot of resources on pitching upgrades? If not they should pour resources on upgrades in internal pitching development. Like you Said draft a lot of pitching this weekend!
DeleteI'm pretty sure the Gausman and Rodon decisions were all FZ and I strongly suspect Greg Johnson's comments to the press were consistent with Busters and Minasian's attitudes.
DeleteSorry Doc I'll try not to comment anymore on Greg Johnson, they're good owners but tend to say stuff in the press that make it look like they won't spend to improve the team. Unforced errors. Greg Johnson comments were consistent with Busters except he went further saying that's why they don't need to spend on Pitching. It sounded like an excuse to me. I'd rather he hide and not say anything.
DeleteI'm just not clear on why it's considered an error, let alone an unforced one, for Greg Johnson to state what any amateur Moneyball enthusiast already knows, that big longterm contracts for free agent pitchers are historically have a poor ROI.
DeleteI agree the Giants need better pitching but they need to get better at finding undervalued veterans and they need to make it more of a priority higher in the draft.
