Big nights at the plate from Rafael Devers and Casey Schmitt helped the Giants overcome a subpar start from Logan Webb for a walk-off win in extra innings. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 3 for 5. BA= .324. Another multi-hit game for Arraez out of the leadoff position but did not figure into the scoring. He did keep the line moving in the 10'th to help set up Devers game-winning hit.
Bryce Eldridge DH- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R. BA= .266. Eldridge's 2-out walk in the first inning right after a GIDP by Heliot Ramos set up a 2-run homer by Devers then a 1-out walk in the 10'th kept the inning going for Devers walk-off hit.
Rafael Devers 1B- 2 for 4, HR(21), BB, 2 R, 3 RBI. BA= .244. Devers was one of two Giants batting heroes of the game with with the 2-run HR in the first inning. That those two runs were entirely generated after 2-outs is an element the Giants have missed for a long time. Devers walk-off hit was scored as a single even though it bounced over the LF wall for what would have been a ground-rule double in a non-walk-off situation. He also drew an intentional walk to set up Schmitt's 3-run home run.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 1 for 4, HR(21), R, 3 RBI. BA= .272. Schmitt's 3-run bomb in the third inning came after an IBB to Devers. Schmitt and Devers remain tied for the team lead in home runs.
Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 2, BB. BA= .233. Gilbert continues to do well when facing RHP's. Although the did not score a run or get credited with a RBI, his leadoff walk in the 7'th inning led to a crucial run which allowed the game to go into extra innings. Manager Tony Vitello made the correct call in sending in Grant McCray to pinch run for Gilbert. McCray stole 2B, went to third on a Wild Pitch and scored on Daniel Susac C's sac fly.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, 9/2 GO/AO. ERA= 3.98. After a Cy Young Award worthy June, 3 of Webb's last 4 starts have been less than Quality Starts giving him a 7.54 ERA in July.
Bullpen- Jason Foley RHP gave up the lead in the 8'th inning allowing 2 runs. Caleb Kilian RHP kept the Angels at bay in the top of the 10'th with an assist on a sensational throw from the outfield by Grant McCray to double up a runner at 3B.
Robbie Ray LHP gets a chance to showcase himself for the trade deadline this afternoon facing Ryan Johnson RHP who comes in with an ERA of 6.10.
McCray is athletic and dynamic...Gs should give him an extended look. Lots of OFs coming as well...I love Heliot's passion, work ethic and power...we need to keep him.
ReplyDeleteIf McCray could just make adequate contact he would be a heckuva player. 4 tools. But the missing tool is the indispensable one.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if participating in the World Baseball is contributing to Logan Webbs subpar season. FP Santangelo said before the season a Nats pitcher once told him participating in the world baseball classic messed up his season. I'll give Jason Foley a pass since he's coming off surgery.. Great throw by McCray in the 10th inning. Merrell Kelly and Robbie Ray are comparable MLB pitchers. The Dbacks got 3 pitching prospects from the Rangers for Kelly at last years trade deadline, all within the Rangers. Top 15 prospects . I'll be happy if Giants get similar return for Ray..

DeleteForever Giant Wade Meckler entered the came with a nifty .311 BA in 147 PAs following a nice 2-hit game against the Cardinals, then wiffs twice, goes hitless in 5 ABs, and hits into a DP in the 10th ending the inning. Another ex-Giant Jorge Soler helped with 3 K’s plus he struck out without advancing the gift runner to 3rd..
