Game Wrap 7/10/2026: Rockies 4 Giants 3

It looked like Robby Ray and Rafael Devers put the team on their backs and carried them to a win, but another bullpen failure, this time by Caleb Kilian, made it all for naught.  Key Lines:

Luis Arraez 2B- 3 for 4, BB, SB(8), R.  BA= .331.  Arraez gets his average back above .330 but still trails Otto Lopez by .010 in the NL and MLB batting races.

Rafael Devers DH- 3 for 3, HR(19), BB, SF, 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .253.  Devers drove in all 3 runs with a solo HR, RBI single and Sac Fly.  The Sac Fly was too little too late after Kilian's meldown in the top of the 9'th inning.

Robbie Ray LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.38.  Ray threw 100 pitches in 5 innings but left the game with the score tied at 1.

Caleb Kilian RHP- 0.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K, BS(3).  ERA= 4.74.  Alex Pavlovic pointed out that this was the 4'th time in 6 games Kilian has given up runs.  It was also the 6'th time this year the Giants lost when they had the lead after 8 innings.  The 3 hits he gave up were all soft but that's what happens if you are a Closer and pitch to contact.

Tyler Mahle RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning side of the ledger in an afternoon game facing old nemesis Kyle Freeland LHP who comes in with a ERA of 7.46.

  1. Cudos to Dylan Smith for relieving Ray. Coming in with bases loaded, nobody out, and not allowing any runs to score.

  2. Giants calling up McCray even though he has sucked this year in the minors tells me they are going to drop him off the 40 man roster in the off season

    1. OK. They may very well release McCray and even sooner than the offseason but I don't see the connection to him getting called up. I would say that makes it less likely.

  3. Thank goodness the draft begins today, and we can turn our attention to the hope and possibilities of what some of these young guys could become, because these late-inning meltdowns are becoming unbearable. It's not just that we have a terrible bullpen, it's that we have a terrible bullpen that is especially apt to be terrible in the worst possible situations. I don't know how to use AI well, but I asked ChatGPT to analyze the Giants, especially considering how bad they've been in just the 8th and 9th innings, then give them an MLB average bullpen. The outcome? This should be a 46 win, 48 loss team. Still not a winner, but a 7 win swing with an average bullpen is wild.

One prediction I'll make: Otto Lopez won't be able to sustain .341 after the All-Star break, Arraez just keeps hitting and, if he is traded within the NL, will win his 4th batting crown with a .337 average.

  4. Draft some young strong arms. Get some gun slingers, sized like NFL linebackers, throwing hondos.

    1. Yep. That's what you need if you want a championship bullpen these days.

  7. The Brewers put Harrison on the injured list with "forearm tightness" ... hope it's not serious.

    1. Maybe they trade for a veteran LHP like Robbie Ray to help insure a deep run in the playoffs?
