Thairo Estrada and Mike Yastrzemski went back-to-back with solo home runs in the third inning. The Giants tacked on another run in the inning turn another stellar start by Keaton Winn into a Win. Key Lines:
Thairo Estrada 2B- 1 for 3, HR(4). BA= .235. Thairo is on a pace to hit 24 HR's. I think we'll take that.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 3, HR(2). BA= .236. YtY is 8 for 18(.444) with 2 HR's over his last 7 games.
Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 3 for 3, 2B. BA= .313. Fitz singled after YtY's HR in the third inning. He advanced to 3B on Jung Hoo Lee's single and scored on LMWJ's Sac Fly.
Keaton Winn RHP- 6 IP, 3 H 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, GO/AO= 8/2. ERA= 3.18. This is Winn's third consecutive start in which he has allowed 1 run in 6 IP. He has a K/BB of 15/3 in that span.
The Win put the Giants in second place in the NL West trailing the Dodgers by 3.5 games. They lead the D'Backs and Padres by 4.5 games.
Tomorrow is a travel day before the Giants start a road trip with Logan Webb RHP facing the Boston Red Sox and Cooper Criswell RHP on Tuesday.
Like your game wrap that Giants beat the Dodgers, but they actually beat the pirates in a tough series . Baseball continues to be unpredictable. The Giants score enough runs today to beat a young stud pitcher Jared Jones, but had trouble hitting a struggling young pitcher Quinn Priester on Friday who had a 8 ERA .go figure. That ending was on script with Joey Bart batting in the 9th inning game on the line, thank goodness Doval got him out on a checkswing. To end it. Not sure what kind of opportunity Bart will get with Bucs The Bucs have Yasmani Grandal on a rehab assignment.
ReplyDeleteWebb, Harrison, Winn and Hicks are pitching great. Snell, Cobb and Ray in the wings. SP is the least of the Giant's worries!

DeleteYou gotta love Winn and you gotta tip your hat to the Giants starting pitchers...Damn, has HICKS been amazing!!!...! With the day off, I wonder if they will just skip Snell's spot and go to Harrison after Webb....or call up somebody from Sac (jeffries or BLACK) or go with the Opener..
ReplyDeleteAnd the flip side of the SP is the meekness and struggles/inconsistencies of the entire lineup outside of Bailey and the platooned Wade..Leaves the SPs with little margin of error...Hopefully, Estrada will be getting back to normal after the dInger.

Yastrzemski, after going 1-20 in his first 8 games (Giants were 2-6), he's slashing .343/.395/.514/.909 while the Giants have gone 9-4.

Giants have 5 players on a pace to hit 20+ HRs.
Flores, last year's HR leader and the only Giant to hit 20+, is homer-less in 2024 and having his worst career year, but he has 3 hits and 2 walks in his last 8 ABs/10 PAs — maybe turning it around?
And right now, 3 of those 5 20 HR guys are also on pace to hit less than .230 with 2 having an OBP less than .260! Small sample size for both the good and the bad so far..But I do expect (hope) Flores, Soler and Estrada to hit better moving forward. They have to!!!

This road trip could get ugly fast for a struggling line up. Boston's pitching has been fantastic so far despite injuries (shoutouts Andrew Bailey) and the Phillies' rotation is one of the best in MLB. Heading into Coors after BOS/PHI might help, but it could be a rough six game stretch here coming up...
ReplyDeleteOne of the matchups I am most interested in is Jung Hoo Lee vs the PHI bullpen. That bullpen is full of guys who pump cheese. I imagine Lee will be seeing a few challenge FB over the plate... let's see if he can catch up!

ReplyDeleteGiants overall are, as a Team, predictably, about average (0.5 above). All positions are very close to average, except 2:
Starting pitching +1.5
Relief pitching -1.6
Relief pitching looks poorer than it is because SF gave up on some lost games when heaps of dung stuck, had some bad games early (Miller, Jackson, Teng), and the SP is much better than it looks because, primarily, Snell's losses.
DeleteThere are 6 big losses that look bad and contribute heavily to the negative, but in the other 23 games, the pitching has been mostly very good.
Bullpen appears worse than it is, although it could stand improvement.
Look deeper, and, arms are coming.
This will be a difficult 10-game road trip, but Webb, Hicks, and Winn each go twice and will give the Giants a chance in 6 games, plus a pair from Harrison could gain 1. There are 2 games that will probably be a snake pit, but a split is possible and 4-6 is not bad.
Two weeks ago they were 4 under .500 and have dug themselves out, they have the pitching to do it again.
