Game Wrap 4/3/2024: Dodgers 5 Giants 4

The Giants once again fell behind the Dodgers early and were never able to catch up.  Key Lines:

Jorge Soler DH- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .280.  Two good nights in a row for Soler.

Michael Conforto LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .370.  Giants have had trouble driving in runners. Conforto made his hit count driving in both runners from 2'nd and 3'rd and 1 out in the 6'th to narrow the Dodgers lead to 4-3.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .375.  Bailey briefly tied the game in the 3'rd inning with a solo blast off Glasnow who had been mowing the Giants down.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.91.  Very similar story to Webb's start last night.  Were they subpar or are the Dodgers just too good?  I am not sure there are any pitchers out there who can consistently shut this lineup down.

Erik Miller LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 12.27.  Miller looked sharp in 1 inning of work.

Taylor Rogers LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.40.  Gave up a dinger to Ohtani.  The whole reason Rogers was signed was to get elite LH hitters out.

The Giants get a day off before their Home Opener Friday night against the Padres with Jordan Hicks RHP facing Dylan Cease RHP.

  1. Schedule maker did the Giants no favors. 7 games in 7 days to start the season on the road.
OTOH, some timely hitting might have helped...

  2. Hope the MLBPA is happy: they have permitted "super" teams to exist by allowing mega owners to make a farce of competitive balance.
Fortunately, until now, the vagary of a short series has knocked off the super team before they succeed.
We will see how this plays out — LAD used another rule, deferring salary, condoned by the MLBPA, to spend a zillion dollars to stack the deck and it might just work.

    2. The losses to the bad guys were no doubt, tough, but this line up is definitely more fun to watch than last year's. Giants could have played a little better here and there for sure, but even as is, they hung in there against a juggernaut team probably playing hotter than normal. Muncy will be the death of us all! This time it was the glove.

Dogs v Rockies/Royals/Marlins/White Sox/A's is going to get ugly!

    3. 84 years ago this month, I was born in St Louis to a pair of Cardinal fans (actually my father favoring the Browns because they could go to Sportsman's Park and boo Babe Ruth).
I grew up a rabid Cardinal fan, but even when they had good teams, they just couldn't beat Brooklyn/LA when it counted.
In 1964, the Cards finally broke through to finish 1st between 2 years the Dodgers won the WS, but they still lost the '64 season series to them.
They did beat the Yankees in 7, shades of 1926.
1963, Musial's last year, was so painful, so almost.
St Louis won 19 of 20 to close to 1 game with the 1st place Dodgers coming to town, then lost 3 to the Bums, then 3 more, winning just 2 of the last 10 games.
Horrible way to go out for Stan the Man, the worst year in his illustrious 22-year career.
I imitated his stance, right handed, with less than 0.0001% results.

    4. They need to get under the skin of the dodgers in the next series. Don't resort to the beanball but, maybe brush them back a few times.

    5. The point to "born in St Louis Anonymous" above, I DOUBLY hate the Dodgers, both as a Cardinal fan AND a Giant fan.
      Seems I am double jinxed!

  3. Maybe a bit harsh on Taylor Rogers: the vagaries of baseball allow the proverbial blind squirrel to occasionally find a nut.
    Or so "they" say.

    1. According to Andrew himself, so it must be right, in The Athletic today:
"Giants left-hander Taylor Rogers, who hadn’t allowed a home run to a left-handed hitter since May of 2021..."
In reply to reporters, Rogers said:
"When you’re facing him or any guy like him, it doesn’t matter what they’ve been doing. They’re the best. So, yeah. Next question. Sorry."
Baggarly went on to say regarding Soler's 1-run blast which counts the same:
"There’s no equating Soler with Ohtani, just like there’s no equating the Giants with the Dodgers."
      That settles that!
