Game Wrap 4/12/2024: Rays 2 Giants 1

The Giants again failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities costing Keaton Winn a hard-luck loss.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 5, SB(1).  BA= .250.  Lee made the most of his one hit stealing 2B, taking 3B on a throwing error and scoring on a WP.  The Giants reached base 11 other times including getting the tying run to 3B in the 9'th inning with 1 out but failed to score any more runs.

Keaton Winn RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 5.06.  Maybe not an ace level start but Winn deserved better than a L on his record.

Landon Roupp RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.08.  Roupp has filled a valuable role as a multi-inning reliever.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. ERA= 2.08.  Walker has also been a valuable reliever in multiple roles.

The Loss dropped the Giants record to 5-9, 4'th place in the NL West, 4 games behind the Dodgers, 2 behind the Padres and 1 behind the D'Backs.  They need to go 76-72 the rest of the season to finish at .500.  They have to go 85-63 to finish with 90 Wins.

Logan Webb RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning side of the ledger tomorrow facing Ryan Pepiot RHP.

  2. Depressing at best.
Until the end, you wanted to believe they would score, but, inside, you just knew they wouldn't: Team LOB: 9, 0 for 10 with RISP.
With the pitching as good as it is (and will be better), they won't have to score a lot but they could use some clutch hitting.
    Some how.

Do seasoned, MLB veterans feel pressure where they bat?
    Conforto, in very SSS:
    Batting 3rd 2-4, .500 1 RBI
    Batting 4th 6-27 .222 4 RBI
    Batting 6th 3-11 .273 4 RBI
    Batting 7th 4-8 .500 2 RBI
That's deceiving because Conforto is 4-10, 8 RBI with RISP, 9-26 with men on base, and 6-24 with bases empty.
He is hitting well in clutch situations, but, micromanaging a lot, it might be better switching Conforto and Soler since Conforto is less likely than Soler to hit into a DP.
Against RHP, the top 3 of the lineup would bat LH to set it up for Soler.
It will work out: these guys, from Wade to YtY/Flores are seasoned veterans, it's too early to be judgemental.
To steal a line from the Mets of 50 years ago, "Ya gotta believe!'

  3. not yet panic mode but, FZ is going to find himself fired sooner than later if the season doesn't turn around and putila may not be safe either from a front office house cleaning.

  4. I agree that it's way too early to be judgemental. It comes down to whether seasoned vets like Chapman Flores, YtY will end up having good seasons or not. The season will be a rollercoaster like it usually is

  5. This was to be expected people. Farhan has has assembled one of the worst rosters in MLB period. Been saying it all off-season and all spring training. They really show just go full rebuild this year and play as many youngsters as possible. Yeah, maybe some of the youngsters need more seasoning. They easily could form a rotation with home grown guys besides Webb (Harrison, Winn, Mason Black, Roupp, Carson Whisenhunt, Hayden Birdsong). Also would be down for them to be giving ABs to Schmidt, Luciano, Meckler, and Ramos, even if they aren’t ready and need more seasoning. I’m not saying those guys are going to give you a winning ball club. I’m saying the ball club that has been assembled is absolutely not a winning ball club and so they should dedicate playing time to letting their home grown prospects on the cusp get experience. It would do a lot more to establish a foundation next year rather than play these stop-veterans Farhan loves to acquire

    1. the expectation this year is playoffs, if we fall short, zaidi will be gone. my results with zaidi is mixed so far and if a regime change is needed, kim ng should be on the short list to replace FZ.

    2. Utter and complete nonsense!
If Ownership wanted a complete rebuild, ever, it would have been 5 years ago.
They could NOT have made a better team than the Giants are today.
If this is not true, please say how they could have been ebtter. The best asset they had then and now is Wade.

Now, are they better than they were 2017-2019?
Are they headed in the right direction?
Would a complete tear down made them better than the Dodgers today?
Ownership would not have spent the $$ that LA has spent.
      Period.
As long as MLB allows unlimited spending, there is no way to compete with LA and NY. San Francisco is nada compared with LA for resources and actual or potential fan base.
As long as a Team can spend without limitations, no one will compete regularly with NY and LA. Not even Chicago can compete.
Fortunately the nature of baseball will produce anomalies in the playoffs. SF can only play for that.
They cannot outspend NY, LA, and Chicago.
But with a good team, they can make the Playoffs and then any team an win short series.
      This is a good team.

  6. Melvin doesn't HAVE to play YtY, Estrada, or even Soler, three guys who are courting Mendoza. Could even add Chapman @ .190 but he does bring excellence in the field.
Loading 44% of your lineup with players batting .200 (Soler) or below, is guaranteeing an anemic offense while 2 guys on the bench might do better, maybe a lot better, and one of them doesn't affect the L/R advantage adversely and YtY's .120 BA is not an advantage over Flores who hits RHP significantly better than he does LHP.
Defense suffers some with Flores @ 1B, Wade in RF, and perhaps Fitzgerald @ 2B, but is it as much as replacing a .120 and a .182 BA?
