DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects

We will ring in the new year with our final annual 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospect list.  We added Keaton Winn, Kai-Wei Teng, Daniel Blair, Quinn McDaniel, Maui Ahuna and Manuel Mercedes.  We bumped a few complex players down into Honorable Mention.  I think we may have inadvertently dropped someone in the process but I can't figure out who.

This is the strongest Giants prospect list I can remember.  It has 5 really good prospects at the top and runs deep.  I am particularly excited by the number of very promising Dominican Dandies, something I don't think any other analyst is focusing on.

Once again, try to not get too hung up on the exact order.  The main goal of the exercise is to know better the players in the Giants farm system.

  1. I hope the rest of the league perceives this class as strong as you do Doc. Prospects are good for 2 things. Building a team around or trading. It is really hard for me to see a successful team arising from this list if our hope was to succeed mostly from within. I also see it being next to impossible based on a 6 year track record that FZ could figure out how to trade from this list to improve the major league roster significantly.

Puts us in a real difficult spot when trying to compete this year when our GM hasn’t drafted any “can’t miss” talent and has never pulled off a significant trade that was more complex than a dumpster dive. One alternative that won’t take a miracle is to just overspend this offseason and let the chips fall where they may.

It doesn’t take anything other than $$$ and the Giants have plenty of it. The investment is superficial anyway as the players can always be moved along with their salaries if things don’t work out. There is still real talent out there that won’t cost $700 million and could give the Giants a fighting chance.

Think of the signing as a future trade chip and spend sort of like when FZ wasted 12 million on Will Wilson except it would be an established player who could get flipped. Think Josh Hader, any SP in the top 10 list, Solar, Hoskins, Anderson, Merrifield, and even take a chance on Mondesi for S&G’s. It’s just money and it’s really the only way this team is going to get themselves out of mediocrity.

    1. I pretty much don't agree with any of this but I appreciate the opinion. Spending money on the wrong players just because you can is a prescription for disaster and I think the farm system is a whole lot stronger than you give it credit for.

  2. Certainly we will find out, and, yes, we shouldn't get too hung up on the exact order, but why did Reggie Crawford fall so far – or is that good news that there are so many above him?

    1. The upside/ceiling is still there for Reggie Crawford but we are not two seasons into his pro career and he's pitched a total of 19 innings and had a total of 40 PA's. He did have 71 PA's in the Arizona Fall League and batted .138.
