DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #13 Reggie Crawford

13.  Reggie Crawford LHP/1B.  DOB:  12/4/2000.  B-L, T-L.  6'4", 235 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Dec. 2025.

2023(A):  .250/.278/.563, HR,
2023(A):  0-0, 4.09, 11 IP, 4 BB, 18 K.
2023(A+):  0-0, 2.25, 8 IP, 6 BB, 14 K.
2023(AFL):  .138/.282/.276, 2 HR, 12 BB, 30 K, 71 PA.

Reggie Crawford might be the highest variance Giants prospect in history.  The problem is in debating whether to develop him as a pitcher or hitter, the Giants seem to have opted for neither so far!  In two pro seasons Crawford has a grand total of 40 PA and 19 IP.  Oh, and with 58 PA's in the AFL, still less than 100 PA's if you count them.

Crawford is obviously a tremendous athlete with a big, strong muscular frame which enables him to reach triple digits on his FB and hit light towers with batted balls.  But he's seems to be quite raw with both tools and needs reps on both sides of the ball to progress.  Maybe he's get that chance in 2024?  Will it be back in Eugene(A+) or in Richmond(AA)?

  1. Hope I'm wrong, but I think G's wasted that #1 pick

    1. He needs to spend more time on the field or you might be right. I think there is a relatively high probability he can be an effective relief arm at the MLB level.

  2. Crawford is a player I'd like to see get on the field because of his high upside talent, LHP who throws high 90"s don't grow on trees. Didn't the Giants talk about bringing him up as a reliever during the 2nd half of 2023? That has. To be the quickest path for him to make the majors . Hope he concentrates on pitching development.

  3. There goes Corbin Burnes, for less than one might expect, so far as reported. FZ has some splainin’ to do.

    1. Burnes is too healthy, will pitch before the All Star game and a good bet to pitch over 125 innings...Not a fit for FZ's idea of a rotation for this year and visions of the #1 2025 draft pick! l..Just kiddin...

    2. Gotta admit, it doesn't seem like the O's paid a huge price for 1 year of an elite pitcher.

  4. Did FZ ship Stripling to get $$ room for a Big Buy or did he rid himself of a skeleton?

  5. Perhaps FZ is afraid to trade off some/any of his prize prospects because he doesn't want to make the Brian Reynolds mistake.
Of the Top 20 (or so) Prospects who are the sure things and who do you want to come back to haunt you?
So, you keep them all because maybe more than a few are tomorrow's stars, but which?
Would be nice to have a Big Bat, 'though looking back at the stud years, did they have a stud Bat? Posey held the team together but not by hitting HRs.

  6. Pavs mentioned on X today that Crawford is going to be a full time SP going forward. Hope it works and he moves quickly.

    1. Yes, and guess what? Crawford tweaked a lat muscle trying throw a changeup and is shutting it down for 3-4 weeks. Ugh!

  7. Maria Guardado also wrote yesterday (2/14/2024):
"On Wednesday, Crawford confirmed that he’s decided to forgo his two-way ambitions and focus on pitching moving forward."
“We’re going to try to figure out how we’re going to plan out [batting practice] a couple of times a week, but the primary focus is pitching,” said Crawford, who is ranked the Giants’ No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline. “I decided on that a few weeks ago, so that’s what we’re going to do.”

    1. It will probably take at least 3-4 years of development for Crawford to make the major leagues as a 2-way player or hitter. As a pitcher(and if he stays healthy), he could conceivably be pitching in Oracle Park by the end of this season.
