DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #17 Carson Seymour

17.  Carson Seymour RHP.  DOB:  12/16/1998.  6'6", 260 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible.

2023(AA):  5-3, 3.99, 112.2 IP, 9.11 K/9, 3.43 BB/9, GB/FB= 2.00, FIP= 3.45, xFIP= 3.63.

Seymour was part of the Giants haul for Darin Ruf and may end up as the longterm centerpiece of the trade.  He's got tremendous size that is well-proportioned on his frame.  Scouting reports say his FB sits 93-95 in starts but can get up to 95-97 in shorter stints.  BA says he has the potential for a 4-pitch mix.  In a video sequence I watched I say a tailing FB, a tight slider and a diving splitter.  I mean, that's a MLB starter's mix right there!

I think there is a good possibility we see him pitch in Oracle Park this season.  I could also see FZ flipping him in a trade to try to amplify the return on the Ruf trade.

  1. Seemingly there are a lot of good prospects who are Rule 5 eligible this year. Perhaps that is holding FZ back from making any 2+ year commitments to borderline free agents, continuing his penchant for prove-it contracts for comeback candidates.

    1. I doubt Rule 5 has much to do with however FZ is calculating the MLB roster. I think he is willing to make big contracts with elite players but the Snell, Bellinger, Chapman, Montgomery quartet are all somewhere less than elite. COVID and 2020 are the primary reason there are so many Rule 5 Eligible prospects. Basically they all lost a year of development and found themselves in no-man's land between being eligible but not quite ready to be added to the 40-man roster. Also, FZ perfers to use the 40- man roster to churn AAAA players than a place to protect prospects who still need development time.

    2. Snell is elite. He won the CYA last year. I think they are going to get him. 4 yrs 150

    3. In my opinion the big contract offers to elite players was pushed by ownership and Farhan doesn't feel comfortable signing(or trading for) a player to a big contract. Farhan places a certain dollar amount for each position and wont go over that amount. Farhan is very spread the risk in the way he builds his roster.

    4. Do you think FZ was unwilling to match Manaea's two-year, $28 million contract with an opt out after the 2024 season, or NYM "guaranteed" an SP slot that the Giants wouldn't?

    5. Have you any confidence that a youthful rotation of Webb, Stripling, Harrison, Hicks, and Winn (4 of whom are 27 yo or younger) can keep an anemic offensive Giant team near .500 until Ray and Cobb can play? Even then those 2 cannot be expected to meet rotation expectations from the get-go.
It seems they REALLY need another inning-eating SP.
Or a renaissance of Conforto and a coming-of-age of the youths without which SF will scratch to score 3 runs/game.

    6. Lots to unpack in these comments: On the surface, Snell is elite but there are definitely red flags that might make a reasonable GM hesitant to pony up a longterm mega contract. I don't think FZ was going to do another 2 year with opt-out contract with Manaea. IMO, the Giants need another reliable veteran SP to start the season with.

  2. I like Seymour as a prospect but, from what I have seen and read, I put him behind Harrison, Beck , Winn, Roup, Black, Teng, Whisenhunt and McDonald on the fast track (and why you have them all rated higher!!!)....Which is a great "Problem" to have...I don't see him getting a sniff in SF unless a few others are traded..or he gets the sniff elsewhere when traded himself..

    1. I put him ahead of Roupp by 1 slot but behind the others. I think Seymour's stuff is more likely to play at MLB level than Roupp's although I sure would like to see Roupp get a chance to prove me wrong.
