DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #27 Jack Choate

Jack Choate LHP.   DOB:  4/18/2001.  6' 6", 250 lbs.

2023(A):  3-1, 2.30, 47 IP, 12.8 K/9, 3.6 BB/9.
2023(A+):  0-2, 2.14, 21 IP, 8.6 K/9, 2.1 BB/9.
2023(AFL):  0-1, 5.51, 16.2 IP, 11.6 K/9, 7.2 BB/9.

Big lefty who sidearms it(like almost exactly 90 degrees).  FB is in the high 80's but plays up due to the arm angle with some upward hop to it.  Secondary pitches are a changeup and slider which he manages to get downward movement on despite the low arm angle.  Had excellent results at 2 levels in 2023 and was rewarded with an AFL assignment.  He maintained his high K rate in Scottsdale but the walk rate went up.  AFL is a fairly extreme hitter's league and a small sample to boot so am not going to worry too much about his performance there.  I would think the combined A+ and AFL experience would net him an assignment to AA for 2024.  Future is probably lefty reliever to be used against more lefty-heavy lineups but those types of pitchers are in demand.

  1. I really appreciate all the work you put into this site. I learn alot here and it has been fun to know about these players when they hit MLB. By the way, you currently have Choate as negative three months old.

    1. I think Snell will have to get a lot closer to Opening Day without a deal to accept that, but yeah, assuming no opt outs, that would be a good deal for the Giants.
